Rutherglen has previously been part of Greater Glasgow but is now controlled by the South Lanarkshire council. Rutherglen is the oldest royal burgh in Scotland. The status of Royal Burgh was bestowed in 1126 by King David I of Scotland.
Rutherglen was once a centre of heavy industry, especially coal mining. The last coal mines were closed in the middle of the last century.
Clyde Football Club previously played in Rutherglen before relocating to Cumbernauld.
There is a railway station on the main street and regular bus services from Glasgow.
