Jacob's Story

Jacob, a former SOS child at Maseru, decided to become a carpenter. But in his spare time he likes to write poetry. Here is an extract from one of his poems: ‘Never Never Never/ Let the children cry. Love, Peace, Prosperity/ On and on we go to face/ The world.’

Maseru : SOS Schools

The SOS Nursery at Maseru opened in January 2009 and has five playrooms.

  • The academic performance of the children is generally good, with children over five able to read and write simple three-letter words. New admissions to the nursery attend the SOS Clinic for the children to have a physical examination and check they are fit and healthy for school.
  • The school holds a regular Open Day, where parents are invited to come and see the children’s work.

The SOS Primary School at Maseru has nearly 450 students, with around 80 children coming from the SOS village.

  • Results at the school are high. Of 45 candidates who recently sat their Primary School Leaving Certificate, 41 received a 1st class pass and 4 were awarded a 2nd class pass. 9 of the 1st class achievers were among the top ten students nationally.
  • Recently children celebrated Moshoeshoe’s Day, a cultural event and the school held a workshop for environmental issues organised by the Lesotho Durham Link and 110 donated trees were planted around the school by the students.
