Find a topic. What will it be about? It could be your life, an adventure you've always wanted to go on, or just a plain vacation. If you want to write a fiction book, make it magical; traveling to a different universe, mythical creatures, ect.

Decide on your characters. Since the reader will be reading about them for the length of the series, make them realistic, yet likeable. Your readers will not want to read stories about people they don't like!
    • Before writing the book, write a short background on all major characters. For all characters, list their likes, problems, fears, flaws, and personality traits. Keep a hold of this, because you might need it later on.

Get inspired. You can watch movies and read books in/about your genre, or talk with authors in your genre.

Plan out the basics. Decide on how long it is. Does it happen over years or a few months? In series such as the Harry Potter series, the books will often affect the following books' plots; if you want your series to be like this, decide on how you'll make it.

Write your plot and sub-plot. This is very important for series writing. Ask yourself questions about it - do I like it? Will people understand both plots?

Start writing. If you can't think, do something else and come back to it when you get an idea. It's helpful to decide on a time to write every day or week, such as from 10:00 AM to 11:20 AM every Saturday.
    • Carry a small notebook and a pencil with you. This way, if inspiration strikes in the grocery store or shower, you can grab your notebook and jot it down. (Though I don't suggest writing in the shower--you tend to not be able to read your notes afterwards)

Ask family and friends to review the rough draft of your series. Ask them to be honest, but not insult it; you can also ask them to review your first book in the same manner.

Get started on writing the next book!

  • Have fun. If you aren't having fun, you shouldn't write it. Sure, there will be times when you want to take your writing and toss it in a dumpster full of medical waste and never see it again, but if you really enjoy it, it will flow uninhibited.
  • When you go back to revise, save all of your previous drafts
  • Convince yourself that your characters are real. Don't ignore, or bully them. Remember, they're people too!
  • One of the greatest tips to writing a book series is to include the reemergence of a main character. Write one of the most loved characters out for the entirety of one, maybe even two, of the installments, before having him or her reenter the story in a key time for the other characters who have stuck around.

  • Always plan out your books. Otherwise, your books might not stay consistent.
