wikiHow:Serbian wikiHow Project/Writer's Guide

  1. Make each step an action oriented instruction for the reader. The best way to do this is to begin each step with a verb indicating the action to take (i.e., a verb in the imperative) and follow this with a concise explanation of what is needed to complete the step. (e.g., "Gather all of your ingredients together," "Find an experienced helper to work with you.").
  2. Avoid the use of introductory phrases. These include, but are not limited to phrases such as "Step 1:", "Now", "Then", and "Next".
  3. Write in Standard English. Start each step with a capital letter and end with a period (full stop). Avoid using ALL CAPS, Internet shorthand, and emoticons. Both British and American English are acceptable, but be sure that you are consistent with one or the other in your article!
  4. Limit each step to one main idea. Keep your sentences short and simple. This will make your instructions easy to follow.
  5. Add a bit of explanation to a step if it helps the user. For example, "Fill the caulking gun with caulk" is not as helpful as "Insert the tube of caulk into the caulking gun with the tube nozzle pointing away from the trigger."
  6. Leave helpful tips and warnings for other fields. "Turn heat down and simmer soup. If heat is too high, soup will boil over, make a mess and may cause burns if children are near" is not a good step. It would be better to say, "Turn heat down and simmer soup" as a step, and insert the remaining information in a tip or warning.
  7. Avoid first person references. In other words, do not use "I" because it makes your article sound like it's particular to you. Your article may be read by thousands of people, so it's best to sound as general as possible.
  8. Weave the web of links from your article out to other wikiHow articles. Also, add related wikiHows.
  9. Check your spelling, grammar and punctuation when you have finished. You are about to publish your work for the world to see! Refer to the list of the most common wikiHow errors as this will show you errors which are not picked up by spell check programs.
  10. Add highlights and other presentational devices. Wiki syntax is extensible, and can do lots of things such as bold, italics, or linking. To learn more, read the advanced wiki syntax cheat sheet.
  11. Take photos of each step of the process, if appropriate. You can find freely licensed photos and add them to your article, if you so choose.

  • Add any additional advice to this section that may help your reader accomplish your article's purpose more easily. These are not steps, so you don't have to begin with a verb if you don't want to. Examples include:
    • The US Surgeon General recommends...
    • To make this recipe sweeter, add an extra 5 grams of sugar.

  • This section is for any precautionary information. It is a good idea to point out any hidden dangers in the process you have described. Examples include:
    • The UK Royal Society for Prevention of Accidents cautions people to...
    • Always wear goggles...
    • This may be illegal in some countries...
  • If there is possible danger to life or limb, feel free to use the words "never" or "don't," as in "Never mix chlorine bleach with other cleaning fluids. The mixture may cause a toxic gas that could kill you." Do not use ALL CAPS for these terms, however. Just put them in italics or leave them to speak for themselves.
