Comes from recognizing one who goes to a preparatory or "prep" school (typically on the East Coast of the USA), or a school with the intent of preparing its students for college (often Ivy League). The word has come to be a label for those who conform to typical teenage behavior, in areas like clothing, school behavior, and sports participation, because preps usually are more ambitious and/or image-conscious than others. They are distinguished from academics, as academics are part of the intelligentsia, and get into great colleges & universities (usually Harvard or MIT) because of this. Preps, on the other hand, are generally pseudo-intellectuals, and the reason they get into great education (usually Princeton or Yale) is to add to this image, though most, if not all, are unaware of their true role in society. Also, preps tend to be more conservative because of '80s culture, while academics are more on the left or cynical about politics in general. Brian Griffin from "Family Guy" and Niles Crane from "Frasier" are academics, while Alex P. Keaton from "Family Ties" or Dr. Winchester from "M*A*S*H"(Despite coming from Boston & educated at Harvard, both left-wing & academic places) are preps.
