wikiHow:Manual Import

Some images from Wikimedia Commons do not have licenses that are necessarily compatible with wikiHow's Creative Commons License. Frequently, they are Fair Use images that are typically copyrighted and used to illustrate a subject on Wikipedia. Some examples of these include:

  • Cover art
  • Team and corporate logos
  • Stamps and currency
  • Promotional materials
  • Film and television screen shots
  • Software screen shots
  • Iconic or famous historical images

Because wikiHow is a how-to manual and not an encyclopedia, many of these images may be inappropriate for our use. For example, using an image of a Yankees' logo, in a Wikipedia article about the baseball team, is probably acceptable under Fair Use. However, using the same image on wikiHow, in an article about being a good baseball fan, is probably unacceptable. A good general rule of thumb is that if a non-copyrighted image can be used in place of a copyrighted image, then Fair Use does not apply and a freely licensed image should be used.
