How to Weave Small Felt Baskets

In this awesomely, easy craft we will show you how to weave cute little baskets out of felt. We will be making small, party-favor sized baskets, that when finished will make attractive, brightly colored accent pieces for display or holiday use. Place these throughout the home, to lift your mood! Follow the steps below to make these exquisite little showpieces.

  1. 1
Cut three strips of felt from the two colors that you like most. Here we used red and purple. These will serve as the base colors of your basket. You will need to cut two strips each, from your other two felt colors. Use the ruler to measure and mark, so that your strips are about 3/4 of an inch wide (2cm) and 11 inches (28cm) long.
  2. 2
Take your six base strips, and weave them together, by laying one color flat and placing your other color (over then under) each of them.

When finished, form two loops with your remaining colored strips and overlap the ends about a 1/2 of an inch (1.25cm). Use a drop of glue from your glue gun to secure the loops. These loops will be the sides of your basket. If you used red and purple, your picture should look like my picture above. We like baby-blue for a nice contrasting loop.

Weave the first layer of the basket's sides. Lay the blue ring on the base strips. Pull the base strips that are on the bottom of your base weave through the center of the blue ring, and hang them over the side. Using our example, the outer two red strips and the inner purple strip would go through the blue loop. Fold these over the side so that they hang towards your table.

Pull your outside base strips over the top of the ring, so that they fold into, as opposed to out of, the ring. Add your unused ring of color, for us the green ring, to the top.
  6. 6
Weave the second layer. Fold the strips that are inside the loops over the outside of the top loop. Fold the strips that were outside of the basket, over the top and into the ring. Repeat with your first base color (baby-blue) to weave the third layer.

Finish your third ring. Tuck the edge of each overhanging felt strip under your top loop. Secure this with a drop of glue. If you have too much felt remaining to tuck under, grab those handy-dandy scissors and trim, then tuck. Your extra felt strip can be glued on for use as a handle. With or without a handle you will have a delightful basket perfectly sized for a single egg or a lollipop bouquet.

  • The tip of the glue gun gets very hot. Do not touch the tip directly, or lay it on delicate surfaces; burning or damage may occur.
