How to Wear Less Makeup

Makeup is meant to enhance your natural beauty, but it is easy to become dependent on the look it gives you. If you want to pursue a more natural look, this is how.

Eliminate foundation and create a skincare routine. Having nice skin will boost your confidence and lessen the need for face makeup. If you're acne prone, gentle acne-fighting face washes are ideal for you. But everyone's skin is different so it may take trial and error to find the perfect products. BB cream and tinted moisturisers are good transitions for this step as they treat your skin, but still have some coverage. Make sure your product of choice has SPF 30 or more!

Pamper your eyes and lips. A good DIY for promoting thicker and longer eyelashes is castor oil. Use a Q-tip or clean mascara wand and apply it before bed. With naturally long lashes, you will need less (or even no) mascara. For lips, invest in or create your own lip scrub. You can make your own using olive oil, honey, and brown sugar. Use it 2-3 times a week to keep your lips from getting dry, and use lip balms throughout the week.

Don't neglect your brows. Whether they're thick and full, or thin and dainty, keep your eyebrows looking groomed. This doesn't necessarily mean filling them in. Plucking away strays makes a huge difference. Groom your eyebrows to fit your face. If you're unsure of how they will suit you best, get them done (threaded, waxed, plucked) professionally first. Then you will have a shape to follow when grooming them at home.

Let your beauty shine through your personality. It's clich├ęd and cheesy, and you've heard it before. But it isn't untrue. Happiness brings confidence.

  • Take baby steps. Going from a full-face makeup routine to a simple mascara and concealer look is a big deal. Work your way there.
