Hi Davecrosby,

Thanks for joining the wikiHow community. Since you're new, you might want to take the wikiHow tour to learn about how things work around here.

Please leave a message on my talk page, by clicking the link below, if I can help you with anything on wikiHow!

Hello Dave Crosby, thank you for volunteering to help with the RC patrol.

In the meantime, checkout the "Become a Member" in http://www.wikihow.com/WikiHow:Recent-Changes-Patrollers.

After you understand how to patrol, you can start whenever you're ready

Best,

Thank you for cruising with wikiHow.
You have been great recently, patrolling RC and helping me (from rear), don't think I haven't noticed ;). You're becoming more of an 'expert' with the RC these days. So thanks for it! ;)

Pastor Zack said:

Welcome to the front lines. I salute you.

Nicole Willson said:

Hi! First of all, congratulations on becoming an admin.

Secondly, you've done a good job of rolling back spam lately, but now that you are an admin you can now add sites to the spam blacklist. Usually, when I see wikispam, I block the user as well. Here's more information on dealing with wikispam http://www.wikihow.com/Block-Wikispam-on-wikiHow .

If you have any questions, let me know.

Ben Rubenstein said:

Hey..congrats on the adminship.

If you go into the drop-down toolbox menu on the right side, you should see some new tools available. One of them is "Move Page". You can then type in your new title in the box there. One thing to keep in mind (and I'm guilty of this often) is to check whether other pages link to the page you're moving ("What Links Here"). You'll want to change the links on all of those pages first. Make sense?

Brett Capewell said:

Dave! I didn't know you lived in UK, what a surprise! ;)

Hafarr6ft said:

Thanks for your input on the awards project. I have more thoroughly defined "validity" on the proposal page. :-)

Brett Capewell said:

Well, wish I knew where that was ;) I used to live in London, I moved to Manchester in 1997 and I'm still here ;)

Brett Capewell said:

TV is correct! We also get strong winds (compared to London).

Ben Rubenstein said:

I usually change the page and let them know...a title change doesn't seem to bother most people so you don't really need to wait for their approval.

Megan said:

Thanks very much. I was clueless on how to change it. Since I'm new and can't really figure this stuff out... :)

Tom Viren said:

Thank You for your consistent input on NFDs. You and a few other editors make it easier to make the final decision on the articles outcome.

Versageek said:

You can usually just put the domain on the block list, especially with things like lotsoringtones.ws, porno4all.com and pretty much everything that ends in .info, as they have zero potential to be sites we'd ever want linked on wikiHow.

We are nice to blogspot.com, and list those only as stupidspammerhost.blogspot.com, since we have so many legit blogspot.com links on the site. We haven't been so nice to other blog hosts and web hosting companies, as they have been slow to take down crud sites.

Of course, if anyone who wants to link to a blocked domain can request we remove the block. We've done this for a few sites - most recently squidoo.com.

Tom Viren said:

Thanks Dave, I should be around for a while. I do plan to be away in late Feb 07, and will take you up on your offer.

We do need someone to monitor the copyvio and image IFD pages. Jack is doing it now, but I think he would like to be relieved of the task. If you are interested, contact Jack on his talk page.

Hey Dave!

Just wanted to remind you that when you do a page move, don't forget that on the move page you don't need to add the 'How to' portion, its added by the software automatically to the title. It looks like "How to How to DO Something" If we add it there :)

Keep up the good work!

Versageek said:

If they haven't made any edits, then there really is no need to block the account, it could even cause problems because it will cause an IP autoblock if they login with the old account, then they won't be able to create a new account.. .. but if you need to block someone who doesn't have any edits (perhaps because you deleted them all for being crud).. you can use the dropdown to get to special pages, and all the way at the bottom - you'll see "block user".

Brett Capewell said:

Brett Capewell said:

I think we've won! I've only had to block 1 today. I wonder where these all come from and how they find talk pages.

Brett Capewell said:

How nice of them to contribute! We should have a spambot welcome template that blocks them automatically and changes their programmed words to link back to wikiHow. I wonder if Travis would be kind enough to approve of my evil suggestions, after all, we could rule the Internet if this plan is executed properly ;) (Just Kidding)

Sondra C said:

Were you aware of the fact that the help team, is made of up of editors and administrators?

You might want to add your name to it...

Sondra C said:

This team was created after a lengthy forum posting,by jack himself....we used to advise newbies to contact Admin for help, but it was decided that anyone, editors alike, can offer help, so he created this team, and removed the 'ask an admin' for help

Jack made everyone on here equal, in terms of helping others....which in turn removed the request admin ...

Sondra C said:

It was an interesting discussion, to say the least, but at least it made another yet, important change on wikiHow...little by little, changes are made, but that is how wiki becomes better..

Jack has minimized greatly the role of the admin. and rightly so.....power editors know as much, and sometimes more than an admin, and actually everyone is equal here, except for the three clean up tasks here...we all do the same work

Sondra C said:

Yes, I did complain, and it was Nichole Willson that was the one who mentioned, that there was no difference between admins and edits, and it should not be mentioned...and thus it went down the line, and finally was changed..Jack approved of it, and reworded it...Every welcome page now has it on there, and no mention at all anymore of contacting an Admin for help.....Some have a little barb on it, unless perhaps one needs a title change.

I did not mean downplayed, wrong word. I meant that no longer is Admin distinguished as such a great job, its in the What is an Admin, page.

and it is working. because now all are integrated on the help team.....admins as well as editors....

I think it was a move forward..

Only one welcome, that I have noticed do not have mention of the help team....and one new one.

Sondra C said:

Somehow you are not taking my conversation in the correct light.;).;)...

I had not said admin is not great, nor was I complaining in any way...this was merely a conversation between two people, and nothing more intended...and it did not have my opinion in it at all.;)

Sondra C said:

Jack is the one who wrote, that Admin is not a trophy...;) not me.;) And, I did not complain in the forum either. It was a reflection of all thoughts..and a suggestion, and then a change by Jack

Sondra C said:

Sometimes I think the worse place to attempt any decent or realistic communcation is on the computer, email or chat..nothing comes out at the other end, the way it is intended on the starters end.

Do you think that only one would suffice? I could edit them all to fit the 'rock' thing. and they might be cute...if the author would not remove tags etc and move pictures.

But I don't want to delete the "Ellen Etc." page either, and lose all the links and discussion. Does this seem like a workable plan?

My husband Eric found that if the page link http://www.wikihow.com/User:Ellen-Etc. is sent in brackets, the full stop at the end comes through OK, but a permanent fix would require a change to the entire email system, which I don't expect.

Rob S said:

Dave,

The reason that I nominated that Supreme Rune Knights page for speedy is because it's just a person that is advertising for Runescape players to join their "guild", or group of players, on the article. It has no information that is relevant to the Runescape [the game], itself, and is therefore useless.

Just my two cents.

Rob S said:

But, at the same time, it's not a DIRECT violation of policy, so I see where your change comes into play. You're right.

Rob S said:

Understand that Runescape is an MMORPG, or massively multiplayer online RPG [similar to World of Warcraft and Everquest]. There are hundreds of similar, individual "guilds" in the game, and this is merely one of them. I came to this conclusion from the separate hyperlink that leads to the website for this guild.

I don't believe that this article can be saved, only because there are so many separate guilds in the game. This could be argued to be a vanity page, as well.

Dave,

Hi, and Happy New Year! I had a question... actually two. 1. How do you decorate, or color your talk page? Check out "Horses4ever"'s talk page. It's full of horses, and pictures of her. I don't need images of anything, just a background color. That would be nice. Do you have any idea, or do you at least know of someone that could help do this? 2. I heard from someone that when your talk page begins to get too long, messages are deleted. They say you need to make "archives" or extra "hold pages". Can you, or someone else you know of assist me in doing this? I'm afraid I might not be able to read all of the messages on my talk page.

Thanks for the help! Once again, Happy New Year!

If you are afraid of my replies being deleted, you can reduce the chance of this problem happening by replying and sending me messages on my archive talk pages. This message will be sent to others, so you don't have to worry about telling everyone.

KnowItSome said:

I have just suggested an amendment in the forums, re what we I have alluded to above.

KnowItSome said:

I think what I am suggesting is a change from simply checking out previous problems and taking action.......I am saying that we ought to have greater latitude in how we deal with those previous problems----but only in cases of malicious (as opposed to mischievous or mistake edits).

I don't expect to get any support, but I will keep doing it that way until someone tells me I am violating policy.

KnowItSome said:

Yes. I have been removing all edits, good or bad, by these malicious vandals. The good are never very good, though, Dave........the best I have seen so far from these vandals is a brand new silly stub article which duplicates an existing topic and is written in all caps, or is full of all kinds of spelling errors and typos. I have been using the "remove all edits by malicious vandal" clause to go right ahead and delete any such silly stub right off the system. That is what I want license to do.

Does this go too far, do you think?

KnowItSome said:

You make a very good point and I will keep that in mind.

However, I guess the best way to discuss this is via actual example rather than via hypotheticals. So I will make a note next time I feel motivated to do this and check your thoughts then. I think you would have agreed with those that I have done so far, but would like to know your thoughts in the future.

Thanks.

Like your new color by the way........where did you come up with that one?

KnowItSome said:

I think that MEAN vanity pages would be included though......I have posted this article in the forums. Do you want to insert the speedy language as a revision?

You're a Featured Editor Candidate!
You have been nominated for the monthly selection of featured editors because of your willingness to slog through the RC to knock out vandalism and spam while still managing to clean up some text along the way. Your ability and desire to "help out and stuff" benefits all of us here at wikiHow, but most appreciated lately is the zeal with which you have been attacking the neverending stream of new broken and double redirects. Your eagerness to jump on multi-part title changes helps to keep things looking spry for those who peek in here looking for article names they can understand and can use. wikiHow is fortunate indeed to have among its own, the original "wikiHow guy like davecrosby"

BTW, I'm trying to debug something in our software and saw that on Jan 17 you deleted a busted redirect which was Change the Name of a Wikihow

Do you remember how you found that page. Do you patrol the double redirect list? Or similar? Any clue how that page passed your view to delete? All help appreciated, I'm trying to solve this mystery.

Jack H said:

OK. Cool. Hold off on deleting any more redirects for a bit. I think it might be creating some other problems. Let me investigate and get back to you. Till then, if you see a double redirect like that just redirect it to the new target page. Does that make sense?

I have always had an interest in the occult and I remembered reading about how the Ouija works. And thought it would make a good article since so many young people seem to be interested in it, or are afraid of it.

I wrote it in my own words but from what I remember of what I read. I don't understand why this cannot be allowed. Are we not writing about our knowledge and experiences... And where do we get them from? From things we have learned, read, and picked up on the net. I have read many, many books in my time. Are we not simply passing on what we have learned from books?

I believe it is only plagiarism when you take it word for word and put your name to it claiming it as yours.

If the article is causing a problem, delete it. But I wrote it... from MY memory not from a web article.

Jack H said:

Yes, weHow does not share their content with anyone.

That said, we need to be careful on tagging things that appear on weHow as copyvio. It is possible that the same author who wrote it on weHow also writes it on wikiHow. THat is legal, since the weHow author has the copyright. And it is possible that whomever wrote it on weHow just copied it from wikiHow.  :)

I'm seeing more and more of those examples on other sites. People frequently are copying from wikiHOw without even linking or mentioning it was from us. Be careful on those.

Thanks! I enjoy patrolling - there seems to be more spam links from blogspot, though.  :/

Shaiaqua sent me a new template to use on the talkpages of users who get blocked for spam. I used it for several users last night, but there seems to be some confusion over whether or not to use it over on the forums. Do you think it is okay to use a new template? I started using the regular block template again after I read the thread...

Brandywine said:

Well, the one he sent to me (I think) was for Admin to place on the talkpages - It was different than the Block template in that it specified the ip/user was a Spammer/Spambot vs. a vandal.

I will use the block template until there is consensus to use the others. Thank you so much for your help.  :) Also, do you think we might be able to block the blogspot domain instead of blocking all of these subdomains individually? I know that it would stop a LOT of spam.

Brandywine said:

Well, at least the spam seems to come in waves. Like right now, it's fairly quiet. It would be nice to block blogspot, but I do understand why we don't.  :)

By the way - if you ever see something I should do differently or better, please let me know. I'm still getting used to and learning the ropes. Thanks for all your support today.

Spleen Soup.. ewwwww, gross! :) No, I'm not the original author - I was trying to thwart some vandal who kept recreating the title with nasty contents. It is a common recipe which I attempted to rephrase in a unique manner, unfortunately that is tough to do with a recipe, especially when it's something you wouldn't ever consider cooking yourself. The general idea did come off the web (not that site though).

Looking more closely at it now, it probably should be deleted from wikiHow. All of the web instances are probably a copyvio of "D'SCHWAEBISCH' KUCHE' by Aegidius Kolb and Leonhard Lidel, Allgaeuer Zeitungsverlag, Kempten. 1976. (Translation/Conversion: Karin Brewer) Posted by: Karin Brewer, Cooking Echo, 8/92," and possibly some recipe software that the content was distributed with..

Dave, this is a tough one. There are a couple of phrases that appear to be directly taken from the Toronto Star article in question, but they almost seem to be the most fitting choices of words—suggesting that it wasn't necessarily rewritten to bypass the copyright. Some of them include:

  • "disturb the dye"
  • "wring excess water"

However, there are some steps in the Toronto Star article that are not included in the wikiHow article.

If you ask me, this isn't completely enough to justify a copyright infringement. It's very well possible that similar steps were referenced, but it is definitely not a rewording to bypass copyright law. If anything, it's just a summarization.

Rob S said:

To add upon that, the article suggests to use "very light" heat on the iron, whereas the Toronto one says medium. Just another thought.

Dave I just wanted to tell you that I am confused as to why you deleted my edit of "how to play Mafia". Did you even read my edit or do you just think that because I have made joke articles since sorry to say half the articles on this site are "retarded" *cough* sondra c mades the dumbest articles i've ever seen *cough* *cough*. You know maybe if people didn't do what you ujst did to me then this site might be useful for something actually. I know your probably going to delete this too since I'm not perfect like all you people are and god forbid I have a sense of humor. One good thing I will say, well it sort of is more like a suggestion. Either delete or never let onto the wiki hows of the day the article "how to pole dance" this is a horrible example for children. Ah, well c'est la vie :-)

Sincerely,

Nina

Hello and thank you for the warm welcome. I am thinking of creating an account, as I really enjoy the site. I was currently looking for a way to post a request for an article on overcoming flight anxiety. I'm sure I'll figure it out if I stick around a little longer. :)

Thanks again and I hope you have a great day (considering it's about 6:20 a.m. at the latest for you right now).

Regards,

sharka

Great to see you back on RC.:) Thanks.

BTW, if you don't archive this talk page, I'm going to have to stop talking to you...since it takes so dang long for the server to write this page every time I press submit here!

Ha!

Hi Dave,

thank you for your sweet message. What a nice thing to say. I have the feeling I'm really going to like it here. :) And I admit I'm very proud of my first award.

Have a great day and I'm sure we'll see each other around the site sometime. :)

Best regards,

sharka

Can you please delete that and remove anything she has put on people's talk pages? And is there any wikiHow policy against killing?

Bummer. Then I guess I'll have to take this power saw back to the hardware store. And the two hour block would be nice. I'll help remove talk page messages, if there are any.

You could have sent me a friendly warning instead of sendign me the real stuff. I have a reputation on wikhiow and you ruined it. Thanks a lot. I just told her first name.

ashley said:

I don't see why I should receive a warning for telling horses first name, I mean if you have ap icture posted online, its liek telling all your inof, so I don't see how the name could hurt. And as long as my warning is not on my talk page, I really don't care.

As few people know about it, the better I am. I did take my warning seriously and don't think I should've received it.

CONGRATULATIONS, DAVE! Some of the world's longest bridges are not quite as long as this talk page!
