Hi, Carterchas,

If you did a merge on the Birth Certicate article, normally you would redirect the title of the emptied page to the new one. I don't do many redirects, but I think all you have to do is put this template #{{REDIRECT|''name of article moved to here}} on the top of the page. Teresa or others know more about it than I do. Otherwise, I can proceed to delete the page, but it should either be nfd'd for 7 days or tagged speedy.

Thanks, I hope this doesn't muddy things up too much.

I am reading Make a World on Paper and finding instructions so I am hesitant to delete this one on the basis of NFD NOT, which is the criterion you used in nominating this article. Since it features instructions such as make a background and add color and draw homes, etc, it seems unlike an essay or a poem or anything else which would fall under the purview of Articles that aren't how-to in nature, as the deletion policy specifies. Perhaps a different criterion for NFD would be more in line with what you are seeing as the problem with this article. I will remove the NFD NOT at this time, but do feel free to apply another NFD reason if you so desire.

At 11:26, Jan 08, 2009

KnowItSomeKnowItSome said:

Okay, no problem. It is taking me too much time to make these comments anyway, because very often people attach the NFD-NOT tag to an article which does have instructional steps.

So in the future when I find an article which IS a how-to, which has your NFD-NOT tag, I will just remove your tag and leave the article otherwise as is, thereby saving us all a ton of time.

The barnstar you received is a special barnstar that is different than the ones you probably have seen awarded on the site. Those barnstars can be awarded by anyone and are templates posted on the user pages of the recipients.

Starting last year, we decided to express our appreciation for people like you who have regularly gone the extra mile to do good things for wikiHow by giving actual physical barnstar plaques that recognize some of the ways we have noticed you really making a difference on wikiHow.

Thanks for all you did to help wikiHow in 2008!

GarsheppTakeTheTime said:

So, following your concept of tagging: since there are hazards and disputes--then we need a tag: Cooking may cause death or dismemberment... Cooking Methods Are in Dispute... Caution should be used by the reader in using wax paper and toothpicks... Contains opinions and is an editorial with questionable use of ingredients... You should be aware that do it yourself methods and other unauthorized techniques are included..."

Well, I can see that your template has great value for labeling fascist or other radic "editorial" pieces, like Nazi or communist doggerel or some kind of holy-war propaganda,

but it seems like "overkill" for customary, wholesome politics, including diplomacy or statesmanship like "Appreciate the Democratic Party..." why be so indiscrete--like you are angry at or a victim of harsh edicts; why not just require only moderate and reasonable material, and not put a salacious, and "incriminating" tag...

And so then is it to say that articles about "Understand..." the "Magna Carta," "The U.S. Declaration of Independence" or the "U.S. Constitution" are to be tagged like "a articulation non grata," as if readers are incapable of discriminating simple verbs like How to "Be Thankful to Abe Lincoln for..." or "Appreciate Barack..." from "Disagree with George..."

The verb in the title and its object contain clues to know what can be included or not included like "Build a House", and then the verbs in the article show how that may possibly be done. "Prepare..., File plans..., Hire a General Contractor...,Inspect...," etc.

But, if we will use that template, it needs to be mild mannered; and that ox-blood border seems obnoxious. How about gray or light green or some neutral color.

At 22:12, Jan 13, 2009

GarsheppTakeTheTime said:

Not needed: it is obnoxious and trivial. To post such unnecessary notices that a reader of normal intelligence should know from looking at the title, and seeing the fact that anyone can read it, skip it, or edit it is pointless.

It is like requiring a sign that says:

"I am a person, and other people can disagree with me."

That is so unnecessary.

At 15:47, Jan 14, 2009

GarsheppTakeTheTime said:

In Appreciate George W. Bush, your "political template" is disruptive, unnecessary (simple/trivial/trite) comment and insults the reader. It and your off POV "Warning" were moved to the discussion page where they are appropriate.

Hey! Thanks for contributing here. I noticed that you placed a comment on an article page. However, each article has its own Discussion page. Simply click on the Discuss tab at the top of any article to include your comments. Let me know if you need help!

Will you be placing this tag on my Help Stop the Genocide in Darfur article? If not, why? And again, your disrespectful tone degrades every article on wikiHow.

Or will you place one on the Appreciate William Jefferson Clinton article also started by me!?

If not, could it be because you like him, as per your picture with him on your home page? Not placing one there indicates your bias, which should alert the adm's to the invalidity of these tags you created and strategically placed.
I can say, while trying to be as respectful as possible, it's people like you that [drive people] away from wikiHow. Could I be the only one who feels this way? Given a little power, you abuse it.

BTW, I'm still waiting for your answers re: the Appreciate Inorganic Matter article, the one you so misread and tried to get deleted. For, if you place tags on articles and don't respond when asked about it, why should you even be allowed to place them?

Thank you for reading The wikiHow Herald! I would like to take this opportunity to give you a little behind the scenes insight to how The wikiHow Herald is made.

  • Omniomi writes one of the three great articles you read each time The wikiHow Herald is published.
  • Teresa also writes one of the great articles that you read each time there is a new publication.
  • Maluniu manages the Meet the Author section. If you would like to be interviewed in The wikiHow Herald, talk to her.
  • Eric Wester also writes one article for each new edition, and sends out The wikiHow Herald to your talk page.

Perhaps you have been wondering if there is anything that you can do to help the Herald succeed? In fact, there are many things that we would love to have you help out with. The wikiHow Herald has an article that shows many of the places where wikiHow is mentioned in professional media. If you have seen wikiHow somewhere, consider adding it to this page. There is also a page called Current Happenings where we list the most recent projects that are going on in wikiHow. Feel free to update this page as you please.

Yes, but the article revolves around Amtrak, right? The article does not extend beyond that specific service nor talks about any other kind of service. So with "Amtrak" in the title, it would be more searchable than just to say "USA Rail Pass".

The other article about FarmVille; the external link was patrolled by an inexperienced person. You may NFD it for incomplete/accuracy issues or attempt to fix it. I haven't played Farmville since late October or so; so I wouldn't know myself what is accurate, etc. Sorry if I'm not that much help!!!

ComconetRolfe H Green said:

I find this topic to 'know The Secret To Success' a little difficult to discuss with people who do not understand it. It is not a topic that is handled well in academic circles, but one that works its way out in practice. I say that because, in fact, so many fail while a few are a big success.

It is a worthwhile question to ask. To suggest that I edit an 'how to manual' of success in an easy 1 - 2 - 3 step way (like a dance class that has no art in it) is a little preposterous, since the human element influences the outcome. And it is that which distinguishes the would be 'dancers' of success, from the actual people who dance their way to success in reality.

However, I do believe there is a Secret To Success, that it can be learned, and communicated. Also, it is not as difficult as it seems if we look at it objectively and apply it. Obviously, those few who do apply it succeed where others fail. Training does influence the outcome - not words alone.

I noticed you tagged a bunch of articles as speedy when they were already tagged NFD for Not or Adv. It is better to let them go through the NFD process unless they are patent nonsense, personal attacks, profanity, or highly offensive articles.

ComconetRolfe H Green said:

This is obviously not an advertisement. There is no reference to product. I have product, service, and sytems - but many people do. So that's nothing new. The questions is whether people are becoming successful in what they do, and that is a learning process!

Hey! Great to see you improving our math articles. BTW did you mean to erase the alternate methods on : Count to 99 on Your Fingers. I didn't read it thoroughly, but it seems like kind of a fun method to me...even if it is very impractical.

Coolio! Works for me. Just wanted to make sure it wasn't a mistake. I read your talk page note now and it makes sense. So I moved the content over to a brand new article to live on it's own: http://www.wikihow.com/Count-on-Your-Fingers-Using-Binary-Numbers

Thanks for watching over the math category!

Hey! Would you mind looking at my discussion page comments for Do a Back Hand Spring on Floor and Tame Your Pet Mouse and consider giving me the green light to remove the NFD tags? I don't want the authors to be discouraged by seeing a deletion tag on their articles if we can agree that the titles aren't duplicates according to the merge policy :)

I have to apologize. Firstly, it's early night for me, child is asleep, and I wasn't about to go on wikiHow all that much tonight, so my "depends" was why it was used that way. Secondly, thanks for bringing it up to attention; it appears that there was a string of "them" throughout the week, so I blocked a few accounts. Again, thanks.

Hi, Carterchas,

I guess we Assume Good Faith. I don't spam blacklist sites or block users unless there is some violation of wikiHow policy...

Thanks,

Bob

BRBR said:

Sorry, but I disagree. I will leave the post on the admin notice board, but what they have posted is on their userpages is in no way near violating policy, maybe you can get another admin to do preemptive actions, but not me.

I appreciate your concern, but I don't pretend to be a police officer or judge. A better place to discuss the matter would be the village pump to get a broader community input. Anyway, if the people creating those pages are one entity, they still don't have the capacity to do any harm to wikiHow...no one will ever even see their userpages unless they continue to contribute.

Thanks again, and great work!

Bob

Charles,

I read your post on the VP about all the repeat spammers. Argh. I hate those guys too. I do have one request for you. Please consider running for adminship when we have our next elections in early September. I'd be honored to nominate you for the position. If you become an admin you will be able to block URLs from ever being posted on wikiHow again. Having that button would reduce your frustrations of seeing these repeat offenders and help keep the wiki spam free for readers. Hope you consider running.

Second question, I was perusing our database of unwritten how-to questions and found a bunch of math articles we don't have yet. I know you like writing math articles and thought you might want to try some of these out. If you want me to email you the list email me at jack"at"wikihow.com and I'll send some to you.

Fantastic ! Thanks for accepting the nomination. Elections begin september 15. So we will have to wait for a while.

BTW your talk page is getting lonnnnng. You can do a quick and dirty archive by just blanking it all out if you wish.  :)
