Being the "template guru", would you have a clue on the maximum width of images on user pages? I don't want to scrunch up any images or words in a .psp image.
I saw the Thanksgiving userpage contest and was thinking of making an image via Paintshop (and maybe one for Christmas).

Hi Cal,

Just a heads' up ... I removed all IRC references in the "Please chat elsewhere" template.

Several of the ones I've warned about chatting too much have admitted that the ONLY reason they come on wikiHow is to use the talk pages with their friends.... <sigh> So they're not contributing anything except extra work for RC patrol...

The way I see it is this: We've already got enough problems over on IRC without steering the problem chatter people over there. Let's just invite them to chat elsewhere (and come back when they're ready to write a How To on something.)

Anyway... Lemme know if this creates a problem?

Hi Cal,

I've played around with your "logocover|image" tag... and I'm not having success. The pictures end up just below the logo... and in their original size, even though I've specified 200px or so.

What am I missing here? Do I need to add something else to the tag line? (I'm hoping to join in the holiday award thingummy... and can't until I get this resolved... Help?)

ps. I clicked on the game above... and had a lot of fun.

Hey Cal, I saw that one of your new template uses clickable pictures, which is quite cool. I thought you might be interested in knowing that we now have an extension that makes clickable pictures that don't disappear when you mouse over them. Check it out: Use the MediaWiki ImageMap Extension. I haven't tried using it in templates yet - if you try it out, let me know how it goes.

I am considering your idea about the template for a page protection request. This would basically create another place which admins would need to check.

How many admins routinely check the admin notice board? You can find the answer yourself by checking the page history. And how many admins routinely check for speedies? This is harder to answer because there is no record to check. But you can check the deletion logs for any given admin. I suspect both piles get ignored by most admins.

So the question becomes this: if we create template for the requesting of page protection, who is going to check that pile of articles on a routine basis?

I think the only way I could lend my support to the creation of an article creation template would be if you can find three or four admins who will tell you that they would like to have another pile to check, and who will agree to check it frequently.

Otherwise, I think the best course of action might be to use the admin notice board for this purpose. Please let me know your thoughts.

KnowItSomeKnowItSome said:

Thanks. I would not call it a problem, rather, it is a question of efficiency. We have the admin notice board, already and this really should serve the purpose. Sometimes the simplest solution is the most effective.

Perhaps you would like to add a new section to the notice board named Pages needing protection.

Pssst! Hey, Cal/archive/3, have you heard about the Paranormal Contest? It is a new contest created by Navydude75 regarding the "paranormal articles" on wikiHow. By participating, you can win one, two, or even three awards! While trying to earn those awards, you are improving the more controversial sides of wikiHow. Although controversial, these articles have gotten plenty of views. Please help out by either participating in the contest, or post this "advertisement"* on someone's user page who you think might be interested.

Regarding your question on the Dutch forum about "How to" being in English: Initially, the software uses the English wikiHow title settings, with each article beginning with the words "How to." One of the initial things the editors for a new language version need to decide is how to best express this in their language; often a literal translation of "How to" is either ungrammatical or simply not used in this sort of context, so we always let the editors of a new language version decide what works best and then implement the new title convention once they have reached a consensus.

At 17:47, Nov 08, 2007

Chris-HChris Hadley said:

I'm confused here. Do you speak Dutch?

At 17:57, Nov 08, 2007

Chris-HChris Hadley said:

Ah, OK. Neither do I :) Fortunately, most of our Dutch-speaking editors are fluent in English.

Well, in case you were unaware, we just started the Dutch language version of wikiHow a couple of days ago. You can see it at One of the projects I'm working is helping them to get it started - guiding them in getting the site translated and making some policy decisions they'll need to get things going. That's why I'm posting in English on the Dutch forum.
