Hi Chris,

As you reminded and encouraged me to speak up I remembered this concern I had with adding introduction more than once in an article to give introduction when in your article there are various methods/ parts used. I recently made an article using Parts and I desired to give a good introduction to the other parts but couldnt because the format of our articles has no option to add more than one introduction.

Even if you do push an introduction at the start of another part or method in an article it falls over a gray background like this article I stumbled upon Alternatives to Chatting on wikiHow When the intro falls on a grey area and not the bright box when seen on the top portion of an article it looks so much more better and bright.

What do you think? :)

Hey Chris,

My apologies for my hasty sentence formation. I was in a hurry. :o My hurried messages are always difficult to comprehend. Let me paste the text here from the above article I mentioned. this article

You can also click on edit o this article and see how the introduction to all the methods is done. From that article, the text from the introduction is :-

Has someone asked you to tone down the chatting on wikiHow talk pages?

And this introduction is showing in the space for introduction.

The next method starts with this text:- Steps wikiHow Forums The wikiHow forums is a great place to talk with people from wikiHow without having to clog up talk pages! (All this text is showing in a slightly darker area of the article)

Same with the next method in that article:-

wikiHow Email System If you both have an email address specified in your wikiHow preferences, you can email another user from their talk page on wikiHow! This is quite a lot safer than regularly swapping email addresses, because you don't have to write your email address on a talk page where everyone can see it.

  1. Check your email preferences.

You see the difference? If its not clear I will upload the screengrabs in facebook I guess and send you a link here?

I don't think that's new or different from usual. As far as I know, since the redesign, we've always had a white background behind the text sections of the layout, which means white behind the intro and on each numbered part of the step, but then a grey box behind the steps as a whole (for each part/method). That's just how the design is at the moment. Not saying it couldn't change in the future though - the folks at the Haus have been playing with a few design tweaks for a simpler/cleaner layout, so it's possible it'll get a small facelift in the future :)

Thanks for leaving a message on my talk page. I hope you had a great start to your New-year! So, what are your favorite topics to read?

At 16:16, Jan 03, 2016

VishwavijayVishwavijay said:

Hey Chris,

Thats helpful. Its great news that the haus is trying to make it all appear on the non-gray (white) color. When I read introductions that are for other methods and other parts in an article, the current format makes it appear rather plain and simple more like falling in the background sort of look. So it looks like a formatting mistake (in my opinion).

I am so thankful that you took it up and sort help from the haus. My doubt is cleared that it is not a formatting error or such but how it is supposed to look. I will get back to you in the future if I have more questions in my curious mind. :)

Happy Sunday to you. :)

Heya Chris,

Good eye! It's one of a series of tests on how we can best tackle those Q&A questions. Right now, it's giving logged-in folks a chance to answer questions, and Alissa and Jordan are gathering the submissions on the back-end to look at what happens. In the long run, if folks seem to enjoy the task, it's possible we might do some kind of patrol tool or Method Guardian/Method Editor type arrangement up to actually patrol/edit/publish the answers - or it's possible it could end up being a Booster/Admin type job. There's a lot of testing happening so watch this space - I can keep you updated on how it goes when I hear! :)

That's a good thought, Chris, and I don't have a problem with it going either way. The reason I used the manual bullets was to save real estate. The intro was already long and I made it more so. Actually, I was toying with the idea of putting the added links into a second column beside those that were already there. I just didn't want to take the time to wrestle with the formatting.

FYI: See the difference in the spacing between manual bullets and auto bullets here: [1]

At 05:18, Jan 31, 2016

HumanBeingHumanBeing said:

Quick work! There's a wee (sorry, pathetic pun..) issue with one of the sections, it's the 'in public view' heading. I am slightly surprised there's no advice about understanding why an adult may have to wear diapers. No one should have to be embarrassed or feel ashamed about wearing glasses to see well, or needing a stick to walk so why should someone who's unable to control their bladder function be embarrassed? Often people are unkind about things they don't understand. If anyone I knew had to wear diapers I'd assume they had age related stress incontinence or a prostrate problem (coz my friends are old) and just deal with it. If they told me they just had to because there was nothing Drs could do, I'd feel sad for them. If they just like to or have become dependent, that'd be harder to handle....but, if they are a really friend, then, well, it's their body I guess. Sorry to ramble. I am fascinated when psychology and physiology are both involved.

I'd say that's a slight grey area because, as you mentioned, most folks are probably looking to have fun at the parks (otherwise, why would you go?). But, in strict terms, the topics do seem to mean two different things, so if you can focus one on logistics of the visit and the other on maximizing enjoyment/amusement (perhaps with a title tweak to make that even clearer?), I could see an argument for keeping both separate.

At 17:24, Feb 08, 2016

AnnaAnna said:

I'm not sure I'm totally following - you think that the "Done patrolling" message is unclear? It seems like it gets the job done (pun intended!) to me. It's a little different from the sunflower, but I think that's okay, since the two tools/methods are different, too?

Also worth keeping in mind that not a lot of people use old-school RC, and definitely not a lot of new users, so if we worry too much about that on only a theoretical level, we may be creating an issue where there isn't really one, in practice. I've never had anyone send me a message saying they're confused about what "Done patrolling" means - have you?

At 18:26, Feb 08, 2016

AnnaAnna said:

When we did the MediaWiki upgrade, Reuben rebuilt the old method of patrolling from scratch (since it doesn't exist in the basic MW system), so I think it's worked that way ever since then. You just have to think of them as two different tools for the same general goal - and the "old school" one very rarely gets used, so it's probably a little rustier, and most of the time, that's okay :)

Heya,

Hmm the addition of the Helpfulness tab didn't touch the voting side of things at all so I don't think there should be any difference there now. I do always forget the nuances of how many votes it takes in different scenarios, though! Was there one that seemed particularly off to you?

At 15:03, Feb 20, 2016

AnnaAnna said:

I just looked at some old threads from the release and unless it changed since then, that outcome sounds fine by these rules:

  • Three delete points deletes an article
  • Two keep points keeps an article
  • Any admin vote counts for two points (either delete or keep)
  • Any non admin vote counts for one point only
  • At least one admin must participate vote in any action that ends in deletion
  • If there is even a single vote to keep, it raises the requirement for deletion up to 6 points.

It's always possible the vote weights and thresholds were tweaked over the years (before my time! I know they haven't changed since), but according to that breakdown, it sounds like your vote and Adelaide's vote would have meant more than 2 points to keep, so that's why the template was removed.

Hello Chris,

Thanks for enquiring about that article. Actually I searched on wikiHow how to make a UIB and learnt from one of the articles Create a wikiHow User Information Box (UIB) that it has to be done using the Write an Article option. I wanted to seek help with it because I am failing to make the desired effect miserably. :o

Can you help me with making the UIB as I like while following wikiHow's rules? I wanted to make a UIB about A teams which HumanBeing and I will put in our userpage. So, as a second thought, I was pondering over making it on MS paint (like a picture) and then placing it on the userpage so it wont have to be categorized in the UIB category either.

At 15:30, Feb 24, 2016

VishwavijayVishwavijay said:

How? In the second step its clearly stated Click on "Write an Article" :o I understand your time constraint and appreciate your help. Although, would it be fine if I make a UIB without the UIB codes instead like a picture and place it in our userpage?

At 15:54, Feb 24, 2016

VishwavijayVishwavijay said:

Sure, I would request you to edit the A team article to help me with the UIB creation. :)

I removed the extra codes to clear the confusion. There are two uibs in my article now. One is a read one with white dashed border.

The second UIB is the colorful one which will be placed on the right hand side of the first UIB.

I hope I dont confuse you. My image of it is like this:

The first (red rectangle) or UIB will be the base. It will have two sections. On its left side will be the image wit the text - The A Team on it. On the second section or the right side of it will be the colorful box bearing the text - All For One, One For All (in white color. bold) The sizes of the two sections will be similar to the UIBs on this page here One section on the left which will have the A Teams image and to the right will be the text - ALl for one.... written on a colorful background.

Im sorry to take so much time to reply back. Im just a bit hasty right now.

I just read the awesome edit you made to the UIB article and I followed the step to make a UIB to see where it goes, and it worked just fine. Great work to the article Chris. :)

Also, The A Team UIB is much better however, my idea with having it immensely colorful and vibrant,, could that be incorporated whenever you have enough time for it? I really wanted it to have that colorful bit (that was already present in the inuse version) And on that colored panel for just the text to display - All for One (and below it in the next line) One for All.

I loved how you placed the A Team picture to the left. Can this image be dragged to the center of where it is?

The colors are far better now. I appreciate you taking the time and effort for the UIB. Its fine if the dashed borders and the colorful background is not supported in wikis. I just made a UIB in paint to give the alignment route. In this image, can you place the A Team Image at the center of the left side. And, the text on the right side, can you change the text as shown in the image - the font style - Kristen ITC, font color - white, and just the text just as in the image I sent you?

VishwavijayVishwavijay said:

Oh, thats sad. So my sandbox will be deleted? When? :( And I shared the sandbox with you to show you both the UIBs so the font and the message could be altered as per the one I made in paint.

Anyways, can you or may be myself, edit the message in the UIB to change just the message on it and its font style?

VishwavijayVishwavijay said:

I think I can keep the sandbox page after reading this article; test article I have a few drawing artices to be made and I was hoping to upload the drawn images in my sandbox/ test article page first.

VishwavijayVishwavijay said:

No, its not a complaint complaint as such. I just asked you for all the changes because I wanted a clorful uib made. If the softw has its own limitations, I am more than fine with skipping certain designs. I might have an eye for aesthetics which I can use to beautify things however I cant be a graphic designer professionally if it requires me to learn codes. I can use flash, dreamweaver, little HTML but not extensive codes. Thanks for saying that though.

Yes, the test article Article mentions the sandbox. However I was just trying to salvage my page through the test article option available to users. I think I will take the UIB as you made and admire its color as it is. :)

At 16:51, Feb 25, 2016

AnnaAnna said:

Some folks still do use sandboxes, and I don't think it's a dire problem here or there - it's a little different from how it used to be, since edits in your own userspace are automatically patrolled now, so it's not a big RCP burden. But I'd still warn against having a ton of personal sandbox pages mostly because there's probably no need to keep creating more pages -- they can use the public sandbox, and write regular drafts with {{inuse}} tags, and that kind of thing. The biggest complication I see come out of Sandboxes is that that if we try to move them to the main namespace, it can mess with data so that things like view counts won't work right. So I'd say it's better to draft articles on main and just keep an inuse tag until they're all done :)

Actually, I didnt use any formatting on the barnstar since they are made on fixed codes and format. All I did was click on the barnstar code in the page with all the barnstars, copy paste this barnstars code it on your talkpage, and type in the message in the reason section. I just added breaks with the brackets <>.Thats all. :)

Hi Chris! Thanks for your feedback on the section order on Write a New Article on wikiHow. I think your recommendation is very logical, if we want the sections to be in chronological order. I'm experimenting with something different because it seems people don't read the whole article and make the same mistakes over and over again. Perhaps they only read the first few steps, get bored, and stop reading. So I figured I'd try putting the most common mistakes first, so they know what not to do, to see if that helps :)

Thanks for your edits on User_talk:Wikivisual. I looked over this article and did a little research into the electric slide in general and it sounds like the grapevine part (ie putting your feet behind) is sort of an optional twist? Maybe a little edit to tweak the wording will clarify that - I can have a look! In general, videos on dance articles seem to be really helping folks out, so it'd be a shame to remove these completely when people are finding them more helpful than static images in many cases. I'll see if I can play around with the clarifications on that one!

I believe that happens on articles with many tips (more than 10), sometimes, by design. I'm hazy on the details but if I recall correctly it's a system that Jack and Jordan designed to order and weigh the tips by the number of thumbs up and thumbs down votes (perhaps relative to how old the tip is, or something like that?), to make sure that the ones that readers find the most helpful float to the top. It's similar to votebot but a separate system, I think - only affecting articles with many tips (where some are hidden by default). I think it may be possible to override the system by removing and then readding the relevant tips so that they're 'new' ones... but in general I wouldn't sweat it. I'd let the reader votes do their thing there. After all, nobody knows what's more helpful than the actual readers using the article :)

That's the only factor I know of affecting the order Tips appear in. Like I said, you can probably get around it by removing and re-adding tips, to give them a "fresh start", if you're particularly concerned, but in general, the voters usually know what kind of help they need most, so letting some re-ordering happen based on their feedback probably isn't the end of the world :)

Hmm ya, as is the topic seems inaccurate enough to merit removal. I'd say really a topic like that is best covered by a medical or mental health expert, since the cases in which that kind of diapering might come up legitimately would be pretty niche and probably come from some kind of unusual medical necessity... Doesn't seem like the kind of thing one would start doing unless there was some sort of physical change like an injury or illness, and you'd probably want a doctor's input on it at that stage. Personally I don't think I'd tackle an overhaul/'save' of a topic like that because I know I couldn't do it justice from a medical perspective. The title itself seems oddly worded, too- like you said, almost some kind of insult or joke, as it's current worded :/

Thanks for your edits on User_talk:Seymour Edits. Cheers for that heads-up, Chris. Sorry they didn't catch that - I'll let them know to look out, and I appreciate the note about it!

At 23:30, May 17, 2016

AnnaAnna said:

Hmm yes, I think what probably happened there is that she moved the page but then still had the NAB window open on the old page and published her edit over the move/redirect, by mistake. Digging a little further, though, it looks like that whole title didn't actually need to be republished on English, because it was a publication gone wrong in the translation of Study for a Geography Exam.... That's why Krystle later deleted the version at Prepare for a Geography Exam. So I'll just go ahead and remove the page. Cheers for the note about it!

Oh, and I just chatted with Carrie about that reflist/realist mixup - she looked up the feedback that the editor had from our internal reviewer about it, and that point was indeed in there, but it looks like they didn't get to the revisions just yet; the feedback is still in the queue waiting to be addressed. That's longer than usual, and a bit too long for Carrie's taste! Either way, she's following up right now to make sure that all the other revisions are done soon - thanks for the fix and for the note :)

At the moment there isn't a great or super smooth system for that, but we can copy/paste and move the Q&As over if they're really good ones - do you have a topic in mind? You could send me the existing Q&As in an email and I can get them onto the merge target instead!

At 21:47, May 19, 2016

AnnaAnna said:

Ok, thanks! I had a hunch and checked with Chris H on that one - we'd want to keep Buy on Amazon, since that's more succinct and commonly searched. So I removed the tag you added and merged in the other direction, too, which as it happens makes the Q&A part easier as well. I would move over the contents but it looks like both are struggling on the helpfulness score, so instead I've asked to have an editor redo it - might be one that needs to be tackled with a simpler approach, or something like that. If you have any changes you want to make on it, of course feel free, though - and if not, they'll hopefully get to it soon!

At 21:55, May 19, 2016

AnnaAnna said:

Hah yeah, everyone is different I guess, but you can get a sense of the broader searches on Google trends - can be really insightful! :)

At 21:59, May 19, 2016

AnnaAnna said:

I wouldn't worry about the creation date so much - that's *one* of the factors to consider in deciding on a merge target, but the one that's already reaching and helping more readers is definitely the one we'd want to keep, moving forward, especially when the difference is only a few months. A lot more folks look for (and find) the "buy" topic, so that's a big factor here, despite the small difference in timing :)

Thanks for your edits on Overclock a CPU.

I am curious, is overclocking a CPU correct, or as the content suggests, is one overclocking the processor? The CPU is the actual computer, minus all peripherals, and the RAM speed, Video card speed, and buss speeds are fixed...? As I said, just curious, and I see Adelaide is the one who actually moved the page///

At 01:54, May 25, 2016

BobbyfrankBob said:

Yeah, but it isn't accurate, since the only thing you can physically change the speed of is the processor itself. Funny thing is, I searched the term on Google, they agree with you, and the third entry was the link to a nonexistant wikiHow article (so much for not leaving a redirect page)... Anyway, we overclocked computers back when there was a real benefit for gaming, but the new generation, post pentium processors work faster than people can actually use them...

Hey Chris, sorry to bother, but I spotted Choose a Name for Yourself After a Sex Change since you had removed the title tag. The article's existing title made me pretty uncomfortable, so I ran a quick search to see if we had any other articles on picking a name when one is transgender, and found Choose a New Name (Transgender). Do you think it might be better to merge the first article into the second one? As a transgender person, I can also speak for the transgender community when I say that transgender people don't appreciate just being cut down to sex changes. :/ (And a quick Google Trends search shows that the term "transgender" is more commonly searched than "sex change", anyway.)

At 05:20, May 26, 2016

Galactic-RadianceAlex said:

I think if I were to change the title of the merge-to article to something like "Choose a Name for Yourself (for Transgender People)", it would work better. That article title is kind of grammatically messy anyway. I was just thinking it's better to merge it, because the vast majority of transgender people pick a name for themselves before undergoing any treatment at all, so if they did undergo SRS, they'd already be quite comfortable with their name and would have no reason to pick a new one.

Got and passed on the various bits of feedback here - thanks Chris! I went ahead and rolledback the pics on the coaching article. For the music one, do you know which specific images they're talking about - or do they all need redoing? If need be, we can remove any incorrect ones in the meantime, too. I just don't know much about which ones are right or wrong, myself!

Okie doke. By the way, I think their topic is aimed specifically at adding it to the "Computers" area of the Explorer (is that the right word?), not the desktop, but maybe you can think of a title tweak or methods approach to cover more than just that!

I did hear from Anna about it and she said they were preparing to work on it. I managed to get one picture up on the lighthouse article, so it isn't so bland. She said that it works intermittently and that it true, after one, it got all cranky on me and wouldn't cooperate. So, I guess it is best to wait until it gets resolved. Thanks so much for thinking of me today and taking the time to write. It does sound as though you are one busy guy. Yes, I get it, but it is still nice you stepped up when Anna was away and addressed people's needs. I know, it was so helpful to me. I admire your skill and adroitness with the computer and the website. G.

Thanks for putting this request in, Chris. I can definitely pass it on, but I can't guarantee that they'll do the screenshots during a live MLB game. If that's very important to you, you might want to tackle them yourself? But I can always put the request in and then if you think they don't do it justice, you can rollback or replace certain images as you see fit - what do you think?

Hi Chris, great to hear that you are still working on your articles! You think you are bad?!!, well, I have a great big blue folder with the printed hard copies + I keep the same notes on my laptop dashboard, the same lot in my wikiHow Links + the links in my browser! I am terrified of losing them on the computer so feel more secure with it all written down in my own fair hand. The weeds are multiplying because we have had rain for days and now it is baking hot. You may need to put some weed killer on those weeds at the side of the house.

Hey there, I wanted to let you know that I just promoted your article on How to Locate the ASIN to an Audible Audiobook. That means it's now fully published and searchable so that readers can find your good advice! Nicely done :)

At 00:26, Jun 15, 2016

AnnaAnna said:

Hmm, yeah that's a tough one - I think I'd feel a little out of my depth with it, to be honest, since for many kids it's likely to be a medical topic and maybe best approached from that angle.

I did see one bit of feedback that says, "Article makes no reference to children who cannot stop using incontinence products due to incurable medical conditions, mental or physical." If you'd like, I can ask whether there's a chance of getting some input from the medical angle on that one? In the meantime, it might just help to make the writing as straight-forward and concise as possible, and to include a bit of referencing from medical or psychological resources. I think in general it really helps readers to know where the advice is coming from, so citing any sources you've used could be super helpful there. Might that be doable?

At 00:33, Jun 15, 2016

AnnaAnna said:

Okie doke - I'll see if they can add it to their queue. Not sure of timing there since they have a lot waiting to be tackled, but hopefully someone can take a look before too long!

At 06:28, Jun 15, 2016

AnnaAnna said:

Ok- that seems helpful. My guess is the reader is looking for a whole article aimed at diapering older children because of physical medical needs, though- that's probably what a lot of folks are looking for here, info about how to support and encourage a kid when there's a physical disability or similar need. Does that make sense? Hopefully we can get some medical info from that angle in there in due course- but I understand if you don't feel like you're in the position to add that bit. Def out of my realm, so I understand!

Don't worry - no rush! I've been using it here and there it seems to be working okay for me most of the time. But if you're seeing the error at other times, grab a screencast when you can - no rush :)

Hi Chris, I'm still not sure what I'm supposed to do in terms of "How to Purify Protein". The start of each step is a verb, such as "centrifuge" and "sonicate". What kind of cleanup is necessary?

At 18:51, Jun 16, 2016

AnnaAnna said:

Hmm it sounds like that might be because once that person's patrols are marked, it's not going to be on the page anymore. Have you tried not pressing back but just letting your patrols go through and take you back to the main bunch patrol page... I think that's what happens usually, after you mark them, right? The back button may well make thinks go funky there because it'll be trying to force a previous scenario, when those usernames are no longer in the queue. I'd imagine that could mess things up on the code side!
