LOL.. right as I replied to Luv_Sarah's and my category forum topic, I got your message. I do have a Gaia account, so it's nothing new to me. I'll be happy to jump in; just lemme organize and come up with a list later on tonight.

On 01:19, June 11, 2008

MaluniuMaluniu said:

Already did the Gaia/Eve categories (This is actually fun!!). While I was doing these ones, I noticed that "Habbo" and "Team Fortress" wasn't in the drop down list despite them being already created as categories, so I went ahead and added them. Didn't notice it, but the Habbo cat was created by Feh in Feb. '08 and the Fortress cat was created by Rob in Nov. '07.

Since the block of new cats was created, I was going to go through and dismiss the "Online Games" cat from articles if it fits better in a more specific one. This way, it organizes the category even more; instead of finding a Maplestory article in the Maplestory sub-category AND the Online Games cat.

I think Wikipedia would be my best friend in assisting with sub-categories and knowing what tricks fall into what; they do have a list of skateboarding tricks, so I would assume to go with the description of each one to match with the Wikipedia's lists. However, there are some tricks that people have created on their own or made up, so those would be a little tricker to "officially" cat.

read this very funny i made it,

Calvin and Hobbes news:

After shooting a few strips for the “Days are just packed”, the duo decided to stop by to McDonalds for a lunch break. When they went over to their table, they were recognized by nine fans and a paparazzi group. Soon the paparazzi cameras were annoyingly surrounding Calvin and Hobbes’ table, and they were asking them irksome questions, about book collections, movies, and the gossip about the illegal car stickers. Some of these included: 1. When will you release a new collection? 2. How was filming for the “Essential” treasury? 3. Did you guys enjoy the robot chicken episode being filmed for the animation area? 4. Did you really mean for those stickers to be out to the public?

Both Calvin and Hobbes ignored all of the questions and continued to eat. It was clear that they just wanted to have a calm, quiet lunch with a friend conversation without being bothered by the pap ‘s. (Paparazzi).

But never giving up, even a few fans began pulling out their cameras and snapping shots of Calvin and Hobbes enjoying lunch. Calvin and Hobbes tried to avoid eye contact and giving answers to questions, but it was a really a hard thing to accomplish with the loud voices and the bright light of the cameras. “Don’t get us wrong, we love our fans, but this is going way too overboard”, says Hobbes, on the interview about it. “All we came for was a nice quiet meal without everyone hanging all over our back”, adds Calvin.

Then when the two friends walked over to their car, they were confronted when Watterson had spoke to the paparazzi, saying to “Please give them a break”, and I need you to backup so Hobbes can drive the car through. Finally listening, they had given up, but not before asking Hobbes a stupid question about his pads on his hands being removed, which was: Are you about to undergo other tiger surgeries? The only reply was an annoyed “Oh my gosh”, and a window rolled up in the paparazzi’s faces. Then they were forced to back out, there for leaving Calvin and Hobbes alone for the rest of the day. At least, for now.

Hey, I was flipping through the "Teenager Requests" category to do minor clean up and used the Search on a request. Category:Youth Requests came up in the left hand side's bar.

Because the term "Teenagers" is no longer used and is replaced by "Youth", wouldn't it be acceptable to do the same within the suggested topics list? So when someone suggests a topic and tries to categorize their article, they no longer have the choosing of "Teenagers" or "Youth" - it would just be "Youth".

It would also be a good idea whilst cleaning out the "Other" requests category. I was planning on changing and dumping all of the "Be Like" and so forth requests into the "Youth Requests" cat, but didn't know about the "Teenagers" one.

Hiya, Flickety!

I was wondering how you are doing, and since I see you hard at work patrolling, while I am lazy this morning (here, anyway, no telling where you are...midnight, maybe>). Anyway, to get to the point, we used to have turpentiners here, who made a living collecting pine sap to make turpentine, and other solvents. A friend of mine has a timber industry museum, and I stole him some stuff for it from the ...well, never mind, it isn't confession time, but we were talking about the old days, and I thought the topic might be interesting, so I wrote this. It isn't finished, but reading the article under sources at wikipedia, it occured to me that this isn't a local industry, it can be done where ever pines grow, beginning with Terribinth trees in the Bible (I said earlier,"to get to the point", now I don't remember if I had one :D!). With fossil oils at their current demand and price, it could be a source for a minor alternative fuel in some cultures, and you might be someone to ask.

Anyway, hope you are doing well in your roamings...if you are still in NZ, I have a friend whose daughter is backpacking somewhere across there with some missionary friend's of hers, say "Hi" if you bump into her...

Hi, Flickety!

Thanks for the kind comments, as always, I am humbled when I talk to you. I thought you might enjoy the article, there was a time, here in the deep south*(US), when turpentining was a huge industry. We still have tarwooders who pull pine tree stumps that are filled with pine rosin to extract it for industrial use, it is one of those renewable resourse, low impact industries that fits in a less industrialized and technological environment. Anyway, I just started the article, went to a ceramics shop Saturday and made a reproduction turpentine cup, and plan on updating the content with progressive pictures and expanded content as mine and Daniel's (my son's) project progresses...we may even build a still to refine the sap this fall...

Be safe, and take care!

Since I hate to undo someone's good-faith edits without a good explanation (and least of all those of a long-established user), I'll explain my recent undo of this more fully than I could in an edit summary.

The problem as it stands, is that those articles have serious title issues. How to Copyright a Book and How to Copyright a Song badly need pages moves to titles that do not imply that any work needs to be done other than creating a work for it to be copyrighted (all Berne Convention signatories do not require registration, or even a copyright notice, as copyright exists by default). Something like "Register the Copyright in a Book (US)", for example.

The other one has a similar issue, as well as the issue that ideas cannot be copyrighted (only a particular and unique expression of such an idea can). It seemed rather weird to say "ideas cannot be copyrighted" in an article, then to have a link to another with the title of "How to Copyright an Idea", you know?

So while it may seem weird to de-link said articles on the basis of content issues, I think it was entirely appropriate in this case. Feel free to revert me if I'm wrong. Even better, since you're an admin, you could do the page moves and re-link the articles with corrected titles. :)

Hey, good point. I'm glad I asked; I hadn't even thought of the whole "people who search for this title" thing. And that is a very valid point So I've partially undone my undo of your edit. Is this a weird thing to do?

Nah, those articles should be linked, it was just the title issue that was bothering me. I only saw the title issue as Serious Business™ because I assumed (incorrectly) that they were titled that way due to a misunderstanding (and that inertia had kept them that way).

So colour me humbled on that count; I definitely see your point in keeping the technically-inaccurate-but-useful titles. Ultimately, if that's what gets what people to read the articles (and if those articles correct the underlying mis-impression at the outset, which they do), then it's probably the right thing to keep them as they are.

And since we're both cool with the work-around around as it exists in the Understand Copyright Basics article, then the title issue doesn't matter at all in that context, either. Thanks for being cool-headed about this. :)

Hi Flick, I have a question about the Youth Category. I was wondering what School Milestones was supposed to target about. Some of the articles pertain to "Be Prepared for _____", "Survive _____" and "Begin _____", but there's also popularity articles there. There's also popularity, surviving, and whatnot scattered around the School & Homework and the Coping School sub-cats.

Because it's currently summer for America, it'd be nice to straight out those whilst the time is here.

Edit: Hmm... Would you think if the popularity category be placed within the School and Homework cat as a sub-cat? That way, all of the popularity articles can go in there since majority of them are referring to different grade levels/school relation?

This is just a very straight-to-the-point and fast sketch. I was taking into consideration of what you said, in addition of going through each cat. and what should be a stay or go. Because the school youth cat. articles are so well similar to each other, I don't see a need of creating new/more sub-cats. The popularity cat. can stay where it is and eventually nfd/merge articles as they are looked at and moved to the different cat. As far as the cheating goes, I'd prefer to see anything that distracts the person of learning correctly be in that category, as I listed.

Is it safe to sort through the Desserts/Sweets and move things dealing with baking in the Baking category? Like http://www.wikihow.com/Make-Baklava ? Or not?

On 06:06, July 10, 2008

MaluniuMaluniu said:

Actually, I was referring to things like changing the categories of individual articles from Desserts to Baking if the instructions require baking/usage of an oven (that's why I gave the Baklava example). Reason of doing this would be to "clean" out the category and separate the baking from the non-cook/baking articles. There is, however, a category request via forums for cheesecake sub-cat though - looking at the "Dessert Pies" one, there are a lot of them, so probably add a new sub-cat under "Dessert Pies"?

Let me say this: More than great work by you. Thanks for being so helpful. I'll read through the two links and get back to you (most likely on the forum itself) if I have any comments/suggestions. Thanks again.

Hey Flickety, what's the difference between this category and this category? Did you want me to move any specific band related articles to the new one? I just found it out while categorizing a dead end page.

Hi! I was wondering if you could help me with this.
I found this article
http://www.wikihow.com/Make-a-Hobo-%28Eggs-in-a-Basket-Sandwich%29
as an article that needed pictures, but it is almost exactly the same as this article
http://www.wikihow.com/Make-Eggs-in-a-Basket
Should we delete one of them or merge them? I just needed a helpful person's input!
thanks,
Felicita

Thanks Flick. Does this pertain to individual artists and "non-rock" bands or just bands? Just for example, "Become a Dedicated Tokio Hotel Fan" or "Appreciate Björk Effectively"? Thanks much =)

Regarding your article, "How to Make Peach and Pear Fruit Leather", I found this picture:

You could use this instead of just a pear. Naturally, I would have changed the picture if the article hadn't been under contsruction.

Hi Flickety,
Took me long to reply, but mainly because it took me so long (and three cups of tea) to read the article you pointed me to, then post a reply there. Huge effort, and the huge is for the quality not only the quantity! If you find some time, please kindly read my idea and tell me what you think, I posted it there at the forum thread of your article. Thanks again.

Hello again!
I think that this article
http://www.wikihow.com/Make-Eggs-in-a-Basket
is more detailed and clear than this article
http://www.wikihow.com/Make-a-Hobo-%28Eggs-in-a-Basket-Sandwich%29
so i will put an nfd tag on it for being a duplicate
thanks so much for your advice!

Hi there Flickety,
It's nothing really, I do what I can do to help. I would have done much more if I could but I'm not such a big fan of almost 90% of the characters that are wanted these days and so have no background to improve most of them, so I'll keep trying to help in characters I might have some background on, and I'll also keep trying to employee any other skills I might have to this project. I think I'm becoming a believer in this project, Amen! Thanks for your efforts and your kindness.
PS. I'm addicted to tea so, it was actually a pleasure to have the three cuppas!

I am assuming that you tagged this one Survive a Long Class in School for a duplicate. I can't find a duplicate. If you let me know what it is, I will put it in the tag.

Greetings, is there any way you could clarify why I would want to make chocolate soap? It's a cool idea, but uh... unusual.

Now I'm hungry. AND I want to take a shower.

Things did: I moved "Band Appreciation" under "Music Listening and Appreciation" to make it more specific. I then created "Singer Appreciation" and organized the Music Appreciation category by separating both the bands/groups from the individual singers/artists.

Going to see about other things. =)
