Hey Alabaster! I started the stopping terrorism article as Prevent Terrorism, but then I noticed that Stop Terrorism is searched a lot more according to Google Trends. Yesterday I changed it to Help Stop Terrorism. I see what you mean about Avoid Terrorism. I thought it would be okay since it says how to try to avoid it. I also noticed that we have other articles like Not Get Caught Looking at Porn, you could say this is impossible to because maybe someone might have a camera in the room or hidden on you. I understand what you mean. I could change it to Try to Avoid Terrorism, but maybe I might think about that. I have still got the inuse tag on it so nobody can nominate it for deletion yet.

The article about Stop Islamic Radicalisation could be impossible too. I might change it to Help Stop Islamic Radicalisation, but that would be more lengthy.

Thank you so much Alabaster! I really appreciate your amazing amount of good will! You are such a nice guy!

You seem to have mistaken "objective fact" for an opinion. Everything that is listed on the page now is a product of imagination. It can't be demonstrated. Now you can say "but maybe magic exists!" all you want but the fact remains that following the steps given on the page as is will result in absolutely nothing happening.

Hi Alabastar,

There are 3 standard "segments" to my articles: Helpful guidance, The tutorial and Explanatory charts, diagrams, and photos. The charts do depend on the tutorial, but not if they;re diagrams typically, So, I've been at odds with myself whether to call my work Methods or Parts. My latest article, Acquire Bezier Curves Using Excel I felt was definitely Parts, though it contains a Video Assistance "method", if you care to critique it for me? Hopefully he'll cool off and decide to give it another go in a different form. But no, no worries at all on the insights and help you provided him - it's good you were there to clarify some guidelines, and it's just a bummer he took it as he did. Ce la vie!

Hey hey Ron,

Ok, step by step!

  • The FAQ redirects seem fine to me, if you want to make them! Good idea.
  • I like the NABW template update and would be fine with it going out live. Might be a good idea to run it by anyone who had concerns in the thread, like Mal, but I reckon from her last reply she may well be on board, too. Just friendly to check if anyone who had concerns feels like it's a good move now, I suppose?
  • On the ANB front, I don't really use it enough to have a grasp of what the current problem you're to solve is. The diff you sent looks thorough but perhaps a bit overwhelming compared to the current slimmer instructions. Do we have a big problem created by reports at the moment? I know McD brought up the signature issue, but honestly I'm unclear whether that actually slows anyone down or creates a problem? I'm not really the person to ask though, since I don't use it all that much. Maybe ask for some feedback from regular ANBers - like Tiagoroth, Illneedasaviour, Isorhythmic, Lutherus, Daniel - on what they see happening now and whether it needs fixing?

Glad the messages are working better for you now! Will pass it on :)

I sent a message to editor asking for clarification. I think the introduction could be thought a bit long, but I have no problem with it, especially since it is an interesting topic/article and relates a warm anecdote. Regarding the formatting, if what you say is the case, it is nitpicking—definitely not deserving of a template, and something a staff member could easily fix, rather than applying a general template with no edit summary or discussion note to clarify what needs fixed. I will wait for a response, but I will likely go ahead and remove the templates. The article doesn't need to go through the format greenhouse...it might come out looking worse...

At 00:58, Jan 16, 2015

IsorhythmicJeff said:

By the way, this article on formatting suggests to use the two-tiered bullets in ingredients with multiple recipes, so I have no idea what is wrong with the formatting. Maybe it was simply placed in error.

You're welcome, Ron. Honestly, it was a stroke of luck that there was a recipe available for spiders. Having seen all the previous NFDs got me thinking (and hoping) there was a way to save the article...since everyone else seemed keen to blindly vote to delete it without giving it a thought. It also gave that new editor WikiMonkey a guided project, which she did quite well. I'm all for deleting junk topics, but in my opinion, there is a growing trend toward slapping an NFD on an article that is a perfectly viable topic (or even a topic from the Suggested Topics database) without at least trying to use the community's assets to turn it around. I'm also seeing a growing liberal interpretation of the speedy tag by certain editors (and admins) who are quick to delete such viable (or suggested) titles. It kind of thwarts the collaborate effort, I think, and I'm trying to correct those as I encounter them. At least as an NFD rather than a speedy, it has a fighting chance, but too often, the easy route is taken.

Hey Alabaster, just a quick question. I asked Anna:

Hey! I am concerned about http://www.wikihow.com/Completely-Close-Running-Applications-to-Save-Battery-on-an-iPhone It received a rising star, but I think it is a duplicate of http://www.wikihow.com/Close-iPhone,-iPad,-and-iPod-Touch-Apps Since it is received a rising star and written by the intern team, I want to check before nominating it for deletion.

But she said they aren't duplicates because they are slightly different. But I think they still are, especially when the article I think it is a duplicate of starts with "Have you noticed your iPad battery draining quickly?" Do you think they are duplicates?

No, the idea of commercial speedies isn't really in the policy as it stands, beyond the idea of admin discretion for obvious pages that need removal and aren't going to become valid how-tos. I'd almost classify them under "patent nonsense" within the how-to realm (when they're not already "content farm submissions)". I'd just feel free to speedy (and advise others to speedy) anything you think falls under that kind of blatant spam banner - non-how-to title with no steps and inclusion of business/address/etc - and an admin can always adjust the tag if they disagree. Cheers Ron!

Thanks for the info on saving my edits when making a number at one time and not Publishing after each (in the molds article I started). I had actually tried all the ways you suggested except for the "unformatted" WordPad, but hadn't had (enough) success so thanks for that suggestion! In the future I'll probably do what Krystle suggested as well and put {{inuse}} at the beginning. I don't mind others editing, just don't want that wiping out a bunch of edits I'm working on at the moment. Sometimes there can be problems too when editors who aren't well versed in a topic edit someone else's original article on that topic, though that's inevitable with wikis (one of the reasons I created my own website long ago, and also chose not to sell it when I'd stopped working on it). I accept that condition of putting stuff at wikis, but I do want to get articles worded first so they're as accurate as possible (some wordings can easily though inadvertently create false impressions, particularly for some subjects). Will continue to think all this through and try to understand what works best at wikiHow! (and best for my time too; there's so much I *could* add here it could easily get overwhelming, something I'm trying to guard against...lol).

Hey Alabaster,

I am looking to get some practice deep editing around the wiki, and I stumbled upon this article that you tagged for cleanup a while back.

I spent some time working on the advice that was there, and doing revisions. I’d appreciate hearing your thoughts and learning more - Would you mind taking a look here?

Can’t say I’ve made radical content changes, but just trying to get my feet wet with cleanup and formatting—hopefully it’s a positive change!

Thanks in advance, A-lan

No, I do not follow his thinking. I tried for the first few messages but gave up quickly. I reached out to Krystle and she helped out.

I usually just do a search to find duplicates. If I'm sure there is a title with nearly the exact words, I'll search for it sans any prepositions, articles, etc. (How To Fly a Blue Kite -> search for "fly kite" or similar). I wonder if they have changed the searches lately. I haven't used search today so I am not sure... but that's how I normally do it.

Ok thank you very much for saying my content is golden. Yay lol that is encouraging. :) Yes I did want to say regarding the spaces between sentences that that might be very difficult for me. My teachers always told me to put two spaces after a period so that habit would be very hard to break. :( But in regards to the wikiHow formatting, yes it is nice. I am breaking my long paragraphs up into bullet points on some of my articles and it does make it look more clean and appealing. So that is nice. :) There was some quote that I heard once that generally said the best writing has been edited many, many times. Before when I would write, I didn't edit much. But writing does improve the more you go back over it. So thank you for forcing me to do that lol. In school I always wrote my essays and my mom edited them so I didn't much get in the habit of editing. But I need to.  :) Thanks for you all your help! It looks like Gary would like you to publish or make official my article on sexual abuse. Check that one out when you have time. I made edits to his edits. :) Thanks for all your help and feed back! "making boosting more fun and less demanding" - I hope we've done this already through the NAB redesign, and by reminding people that boosting is no longer a painful process where you must try to turn every new article into an excellent resource; it's more of a curation process like recent changes where you sift the wheat from the chaff.

Hi. I see you placed a nfd on Understand the Indian Political System back on 5 Feb 15, but you didn't place a reason in the discussion page. Care to enlighten? Also, did you place the 'inuse' template? Will you finish soon? I'd like to at least get it out of the nfd list.

Thank you for your response. The information you note are not things normally understood by the average editor.
While your reasoning may be close to obvious to you, they are not to others.
The reason why wikiHow requests, through policy, that templates are defined in the discussion page is for that reason, so subsequent editors understand why the nfd is placed.
There are several instances where there may be more than one reason for placing an nfd. As you have noted, in this case, the article is closer to formatting and editorial copy/edit than before, but remains unsuitable for wikiHow publication.
For further clarification, please make use of the tutorial and the Writer's Guide.

Hey Ron,

Thank you for the idea and for adding these new resources! I am sure that they will be helpful to boosters with the new boosting system :)

Another thing that I would suggest would be adding the article on How to Use the wikiHow New Article Boost App to the list of resources, as that explains the way to boost, and the article on How to Become a New Article Booster on wikiHow would help too. What do you think?

P.S - The Special:NewPages might be helpful, since there are always new pages being created.

I would *love* to feature Cook Tarantula Spiders! I've already added it to the tentative list. Please do give it a close look - I did but it never hurts to have more eyes on the article. Personally, I really enjoy nifty, quirky, and "wild" topics. I think that's where the wiki model can truly thrive, so please don't ever hesitate to send me suggestions like these.

As for Supercharge Collaborative Decisions, I actually think it's ready for featuring as is. I understand wanting to get the images just right, but with this topic, the text really makes it, and I don't think images are going to be what sets it apart. The content already has done that. I would like to feature it in its current form, as I think it's a great example of community-driven, quality content.

"As an adjunct, I think that additional edited recordings of hangouts (starring such individuals as Felicity, Deniseke, Anna, and Jeff) would be awesome if they were folded into articles categorized within the wikiHow instruction manual."

I like this idea a lot. I don't have much experience editing videos though. Is this something you'd be interested in helping with?

I hope you can make it to the next meetup, by the way. It's going to be at around the same time of year, most likely, and on the west coast (very possibly in Portland, OR). I think you would really enjoy the discussions there, and it would be great to meet you offline!

I requested them with your suggestions back when we talked about it, but I'm guessing from the lack of images that they haven't found someone who can address the detailed feedback we provided on how the images might be better. They might still be created, but I don't know when.

In the past, though, this has generated a list for me. Maybe there is a bug in the programming or maybe I am doing something wrong. In any case, I thought it better not to perpetuate this aggravation by putting the link on my userpage."

Haha, yes, it can be a bit confusing coming from a different OS. I've been lucky using Linux and Mac most of my life (and a bit of Windows as well).

I can't think of any programs immediately. There are of course various apps which you can pay for to do animations, schematics and all of that, but that's if you pay. I assume you're already using PowerPoint for slide shows? If you have an Android tablet you might be able to use some animation apps from the Play Store, such as Flipaclip, which allows you to make simple animations by drawing each frame.

Good luck with your projects!

It is the reason I thought the second, superior method should be made available to the public. If you feel this has no value then me staying up all night trying to edit my piece was a waste of time. Maybe you could try the clear cookies/cache business and also turn off any extensions to see if that makes a difference? Sorry to send you through any bug hunt hoops but it's just almost impossible to fix something if we don't know when/where it's happening, so checking all the boxes to try to narrow it down is the way forward. Sorry to hear it didn't get a TU the first time around -- but then one of my joys is poking around recent bold edits and sending out the lurve, whether I'm patrolling them or not, so more for me, I suppose! Cheers for being awesome :)

Hey Ron,

How are things?

I was wondering if you had any interest in trying out the topic-based email newsletter I'm experimenting with? I'm working on building a mailing list of people I can send questions to on various categories. You can pick the categories you want to subscribe to on this form and you can unsubscribe at any time.

If you're not interested, no worries at all :)

Thanks for your edits on Get Plump Juicy Lips without Makeup. Cheers for adjusting this -- the "withouts" still always get me. Titlecase.com reports it back as Without, but I know our Title policy reports otherwise. What's your experience been in other arenas in the past? Are we the odd ducks out on that rule?

Redirects created here on wikiHow just don't appear on Google for that term, as far as I know. Google's bots just crawl the actual title and contents. That being said, I think in some instances Google itself knows to look for synonyms when you enter certain terms, so they may come up anyway, if we're lucky! But I think that's down to the search engine side and how it interprets language and meaning, not the redirects.

As for the Asperger's and Autism titles, I think it gets tricky because they were once upon a time not considered synonymous, but the DSM now doesn't use Asperger's at all. So it's probably more of an update/acc issue, rather than a merge one. To a certain extent, it depends on what folks are still searching for, I guess. Maybe Google Trends would shed some light!

Ullo Ron. It was nice of you to speak up on my talk page about FAP. I am very happy with everything that has been said by everybody and not holding anything against anyone. I think Blackcats message was quite funny, I knew what they meant though and will prowl, as if I was in that alley you mentioned, around the edges of the project and chip in when asked or when there's an article it think I could add to. I am happy to hear from you. We always have such pleasant interaction. I want to include you in my celebration, so Merry Christmas! It's not exclusive (or excluding others) by wishing others "Merry Christmas", but some propose that it is wrong to even say it nicely in public. But, saying "happy holidays" is NOT inclusive (not reaching out) but merely excludes the 80% who would like to say Merry Christmas, i.e.: excluding them and me from our desire to include/bless others by proclaiming a "Merry/Blessed Christmas". So what if it was Winter Solstice, once a pagan holiday; but calling it Christmas now elevates it to a higher calling... How to Celebrate Christmas.

Ron, are you a technical writer in the business world now days? I clicked on your info on the "People you may know on Linked In" (your last name is safe with me here on wH), but I really have no need/interest in doing LI which is mainly for professionals. I only joined it about 4 years ago to be in contact with an attorney who was an organizer for our 50th high school reunion in 2013 (class of '63). I only have that link and my wife's account linked in. That's it. She also does Facebook, but I do not. I sometimes sent a private message on her FB to FB friends and my relatives that she has as friends on her FB page. I would spend to much time on building a net for no good reason; so, I piggyback on her accts.

She has organized and does the communicating for reunion groups (for three large companies she worked at who closed the local office or went out of business and left them grasping) and meets monthly with her high school class, and monthly with local retired teachers assn, as well, to keep up with. I'm really not into organizations other than church and family.

Thanks for your edits on User_talk:Byankno1. Seems better, though not quite up to par. Personally, perhaps maybe that "Modify" part of the wikitext could be split off and the title changed to Identify a Diaper Addiction....but then again, that's my thought/call on that tricky subject.

Thanks for your edits on User_talk:Byankno1. I sent a message to Anna, asking her for her input. I'm not 100% vetoing the idea, but IMHO that's not 100% the best idea that should happen to that article, but something does need to be done to/with it.

You mean if I removed the signs and the magic words? I will try it now with one of my article just now.

Hey Al,

No, :( Its not happening still. Please see this link: http://www.wikihow.com/index.php?title=Draw-the-Map-of-India&action=edit&override=yes#editform I removed the magic words and the '='

Yes, it did work. I clicked on guided edit option and it did take me there. :)

So, that is also a solution to either remove those words and the = symbol or add something besides it. Okay, I will do it then. Yet, it leaves the possibility of someone reverting our edit as it happened to matt's article. We need a change in the wikiHow format. What say?

I will quickly edit matt's article that you have reverted back to your version. Thanks :)

I will restore the tags after I add the links. Actually I got a little messed up because one of your messages on my talkpage was reverted by someone while patrolling. I was caught up with restoring that one.

I will send you a link after I add links to the article. :)

Thanks for your edits on Post a Tweet Longer than 140 Characters. Did you need this to be stuck that way, or can we revert now? If you need to show it to someone, you can use this diff and this link, but I'm hesitant to keep the version with broken formatting up too long?

Hahaha well intentioned user was indeed reverting every edit. :D I saw his profile is a year old so I felt a little hesitant to send a talk page alert. Butterfly Princess did it well anyways :).

Yes, I understand. Please change the tags as before. I am sorry I was taking too long. I finished adding only two links so far. I will add the rest after you get it back to previous version. :)

Okk, sounds good to me. I believe if we change the title as is, it'll cause some issues with the expert review tile though, so if it's all right with you, I'll send an email about it and fix it once that's sorted out. Might be next week since we are off for the holidays but leave it with me and I'll let you know if there are any issues!

Thanks for your edits on User_talk:Byankno1. BOth Anna and I agree, upon closer inspection. NO other action will be taken on that article. That is the more searched title (the one that's already present) as well as the extra information being great for the reader to know what to do if they suspect that they are (going that step further that most sites won't do to topics as weird as these).

As she states in her message:

I think, sometimes, being thoroughly helpful on a given topic means going beyond the first parts of the search/title and providing the additional help that many readers are looking for when they do that search.

No problem, I actually remember my sixth grade teacher telling my class to use word form for numbers below 100/formal situations so I considered that nicely done. Have a happy new year! :-)
