Hi Bo,

Sorry for the delayed response. I'm in college and don't get to spend as much time here as I'd like. I usually try to do a little bit of RC patrolling as often as I can and I've seen your name come up a few times.
Thanks for the greeting. I'm sure I'll see you around quite a bit (and hopefully you'll see me around here more, too ;)

Hello Bo. Life has been going well for me.
I've been doing a lot of projects over the past few months, so I've had little time to give to wikiHow. Also, I've really lost a lot of interest in our community since the new site version. It took me a while to notice one of the major contributors to my disinterest. Nothing is as elegant as it used to be. Meh. And with all of the problems we've been having with bugs, and those making a big fuss over it, it has really crushed my wiki spirit.

Oh well. The world of wikiHow may improve in the future. I've been toying with ideas to energize the community, but it's sort of like a dead battery trying to recharge other dead batteries, lol.

Hi Bo, this is the message I left someone else who rolled back my changes. My annoyance here is not that you and others continually remove my link but that none of you do the same for the article...

Are you going to do the same for the address I gave, that guy is shamelessly promoting his business for sale site and he does not know anything about running a hotel as I mentioned I do actually run a hotel. I know a lot about this guy and I guarantee you he has no authority on hotel running, he lives in London and runs a website business he has nothing to do with hotels other than acccepting payments for advertisments for all business types.

What specific point do you make that is different in my case, please be specific. My article actually is not a bad attempt at explaining what it is actually like to run a small hotel and it is valuable to people who would like to go down this path.

Explain to me please why

remains intact.

What annoys me here is not that you remove my link but that you leave one around which is clearly a flagrant commercial advertisment from someone who is not in the slightest bit interested in the subject matter - please go and sort that one out and I will shut up.

Thanks Jon

At 21:41, Sep 15, 2007

JonwikiJonwiki said:

Hello Bo

Yes I have been given a link to the external links page but I have not had my question answered, why does

remain intact? Have you trawled through this website in order to find the article ? Please treat this article equally and go remove his "citations" aka commercial links or tell me specifically why you think his are different. I repeat the author of the above article does not run a hotel but he does run the website company "businesses for sale"

None of you have given me a good explanation of why his links remain.

Regards Jon

My name is not hate based. At all. I am insult as a socialist by the very thought. What it sounds like is that other people have the right to call us names and make fun of us in every available media, but we aren't allowed to take the power out of the words by adopting them. I am not a crazee_gurl_59 type person. IF you have a problem with me being a socialist, that's just prejudice, and if you object to my use of the word "scum" it's a self-reference. People don't get mad at Christians for wearing crosses though it is the device of torture used on the savior in question. It's called adopting the symbol of the oppressor, and it's an old concept. If you'll censor me on this, then I was under the wrong impression about this being a free collective exchange of ideas. I may have some hate lurking about in me, mainly against those who prey on the weak, but there's so little ill will against socialists coming from this direction- that I'm surprised you can't feel the love through the internet.

Ah, many questions about requests. GOOD. We can use help there. This will be a long answer and may come in many pieces. First, do not delete any requests appearing in the answered requests category. Those are corralled and will never come up in a category, say PETs or whatever as a request to be answered. This is supposed to be automated now, so that we do not have to do any of those deletions. And there is a thought that these need to stay on our books in the Answered category so that we can count them and gather data. More in next note.......

Next have asked which requests to delete. Do you already know about Amy's Wiki Wanted project? She is looking for people who are willing to watch one category each. So you will not want to work on any categories which she has covered by someone else.

The exception here, will be when those people have marked some requests for NFD. And in this case, you can find these all bunched up at the top either of page one or page two (if there is one) of the NFD list. These you can go ahead and delete if the request deletion seems reasonable to you. I sometimes revert these, but generally I just go by what the person in charge has asked. More coming later.......

The main thing I like to keep in mind when reviewing a request is this: If someone answers this request, will it result in an article we will want to keep? If the answer is no, I tend to delete, or at least edit the title to lead the respondent to write something we actually need.

We don't want requests about how to be popular or how to ollie on a skateboard, for example, because these will result in a duplicate. Many post a request and then write a monologue in the description section. Often I will delete these on the basis of "wikiHow is not a personal advice service" and I will delete others on the basis of "wikiHow is not a homework completion service". Very often it is necessary to Search wikiHow before deleting a request.....if we don't have the topic covered AND if this is a topic that people would actually be in search of, then I keep.

I hope you got some good sleep!

At 17:26, Oct 10, 2007

KnowItSomeKnowItSome said:

Yes, but let me we have one little wrinkle.

Deleting a request for an article we already have is actually slightly DIFFERENT from deleting an ANSWERED REQUEST. Theoretically, someone will see an answered request as a blue link and thus clicking on it will not open the create a page form, so we ought not to have to worry about knocking these out of the system.

But we have many articles which get answered under ever so slightly different titles......if we have already on file an article entitled How to Email , we ought to delete requests for any of the following:

How to EMail a Friend How to Send an Email How to Send Email

All such requests need to be deleted so that we do not invite another article for the big merge pile.

So .......yes, indeed. Please do delete requests for any articles which we already have....or which are very similar to those we already have.

<peals of delighted laughter> Thank you! These towel animals were requested in the Hobbies and Crafts requests... and when I googled them to find out just what exactly the requester was wanting, I couldn't resist writing the articles on the spot. They are SOoooooo cute!

There may be a few more as time goes on. KnowItSome has pics from a cruise she took... and between her photo's and mine, we're getting GREAT little articles.

How do I take an article out of "Needs Further Editing"? In Arts and Entertainment -> Music -> Musical Instruments -> Guitar -> Play Guitar(Beginners Guide), I cleaned it up for accuracy and grammar, etc.

I'd like it put in the normal part of the category but I can't figure out that. Help please?

Now for the "uggh" part of the message... we never did pick a FE :P You can try to catch me on IRC, or email me and let me get back to you. I keep meaning to do it, but I just got back from camp and I am so sore and tired you could not even imagine it... :P So please get back to me and hope the community doesn't execute us by the flagpole at dawn for being two weeks behind ;)

Looks like someone took that "in use" tag off of Make Apple Cider. Just wanted to let you know--I'd hate to see a good topic like that get nominated for deletion for having no content! I know you can do an amazing job with it. =)

Hi Bo,

I am in need of a collaborator to help me with Copy Editing and Formatting. I posted a "help wanted" message in the forums, and Webster sent me a link to the CopyEditor team page... and your name is at the top... so here's my request:

I'm great at quickly cranking out good explanatory articles, but the CE and formatting work take me a long time to get right. -too detail oriented for my brain to process quickly, I guess.

I've been writing an article a day, more or less, mostly from the "Hobbies and Crafts" request list. KnowItSome unleashed a writing monster when she assigned "leadership" of that section to me... <wide grin>

I've got the articles I've written listed on my author page. I've organized them by topic and they are listed in order that they were written within each topic.. You could just start at the bottom of a topic and work your way up.

Even if you're willing to do a few, it would be a HUGE help to me! Lemme know how much you can handle, and perhaps I can alternate days or articles between good editors or something.

Please? Pretty please? Pretty please with a cute template sent your way?

Merowl? Will you help my "mommie"? Her human name is "Lois Wade"... She's a very good "mommie"... pets me a lot, feeds me good food, cleans out the litter box...

I just KNOW that she would take good care of you too! She likes to send nice thank you notes using funny templates... and she really could use the help with her copy editing... She's a nice mommie, but not a good capitalizer or formatter...

Thank Mew Very Much! <sounds of purrring>

Hey Bo! I had the good ole' fresh apple cider in mind, not the forget-your-troubles kind! I think the alcoholic one is referred to as "hard cider" in the US. It'd be cool if we had articles on both, whatever you're up for! =P

Loiswade42Lois Wade said:

That is a HUGE relief to me! Thank you, Thank you, THANK YOU!

I've been cranking out a LOT of stuff... ever since KnowItSome asked me to be the "leader" of the Hobbies and Request Section... Mostly, I just draw attention to good titles for folks to write about, but there are just so many of those requests... 190 or so... and I already know how to do so much of that stuff... <sigh>... some of the requests kinda jump out and grab my attention and DEMAND that I write them on the spot. There are a lot of "easy" ones that I've written in 20 minutes or so... and I'm gettin way behind in the CE department.

Just head on over to my author page and scroll down ... you'll see the categories... and the articles are in date order within the categories. Obviously, the featured articles won't need help... but the last 3 or 4 in all the other sections DO.

Please let me know if there is anything I can do to make your job easier? You know... if there is a silly mistake that I make often, and just need to learn to do it "right" the first time? (I'm just so "into" the writing that I don't notice a lot of my mistakes until several days later... when I read it with new eyes... and even THEN, I miss a lot of grammar and formatting issues. <sigh>)

I have looked at some of the past edits.....anyone who posts a speedy is eligible for an immediate block of up to one month depending on how severe a problem you think it is. From Block Disruptive Users on wikiHow:
Users seen to be acting in bad faith should be blocked for violating wikiHow guidelines when they post spam, hate speech, inappropriate content, nonsense, or vandalism., and
Bad faith edits may also include the creation of articles that require speedy deletion.and
Clearly bad faith editors can be blocked for up to 1 month without warning.

Once a speedy has been deleted, it is hard and sometimes impossible for an admin to know about that speedy, or to find it again, in order to review it, unless they have the title at hand. This is why we like to encourage use of the {{nothanks|insert exact title of speedy here}}

I don't really know that we have proof they are sockpuppets of each other?

At 22:04, Oct 27, 2007

Eric-WFreunde said:

You can ask Versageek about looking up IP addresses. We would have to be 100% certain that they are sockpuppets before banning for an extended period of time. Also, if we did find out that they are sockpuppets, then I would block for 3 months rather than forever. :)
