How to Use Uber

Two Parts:Signing Up for UberGetting a Driver

Uber is an on-demand car service that allows you to request private drivers through applications for iPhone and Android devices. The service utilizes dispatch software to send the nearest driver to your location. Don't be fooled into thinking this is some sort of shared ride or cab service - Uber will send you a private taxi-style car. The service provides a cashless solution that charges your ride directly to the credit card on file with your account. This article will walk you through the process of using Uber to request a car.

Part 1
Signing Up for Uber

  1. Image titled Use Uber Step 1
Visit the Uber website. Uber is a company that allows you to reserve a personal driver in any of the cities that Uber operates in. These drivers do not work specifically for Uber, but pay a percentage to Uber so that they get listed.
  2. Image titled Use Uber Step 2
Click the Sign Up link. You will be asked to create an account. Uber will need your name, mobile number, email, language, and billing information. As promo code, you can use one from a friend who is already a uber user which will provide both of you with a credit around $20 / €15. [Please do not post individual uber codes here - that is against uber guidelines and policy and your credit balance will be nullified by uber.] If you cannot obtain a promo code from a friend, you can visit uber's site for a promo code. You need a valid credit card or PayPal account to use the Uber service.

Read the terms and conditions. Make sure that you are OK with Uber’s terms and privacy policy before continuing on with the service.

Click the Sign Up button. Your account will be created and you will be sent an email confirming the creation of the account. You’re ready to start using the Uber service.

Part 2
Getting a Driver

Download the app. The Uber app is available for free from the Apple App Store, the Google Play Store, and the BlackBerry App World. Install the app on your device and then open it.
  2. Image titled Use Uber Step 6
Sign in. Once you’ve downloaded the Uber app, you will need to sign in the first time that you run it. Log in with the username and password that you signed up with.

Choose your vehicle type. There are up to five types of vehicle services for Uber, depending on the city you are in. Use the slider at the bottom of the app to set your vehicle preference. The five types of services available are:
    • Black Car – This is Uber’s original service. Choosing Black Car will send a high-end sedan to your location, with seating for up to 4 people.
    • Taxi – This calls a taxi that has an agreement with Uber. These taxis are much like any normal taxi, except that you can pay through the app.
    • UberX – This sends an everyday car to your location with seating for up to four people. This is Uber’s budget option.
    • SUV – This will send an SUV to your location with seating for up to 6 people. This is significantly more expensive than the Black Car service.
    • LUX – This will send a high-end luxury car to your location with seating for up to four people. This is Uber’s most expensive service.

Mark your location. Once you’ve chosen your vehicle type, mark your position on the map with a pin. This pin represents where the driver will be expecting to pick you up. You can also manually type in the pickup location. Once your location is set, tap the “Set Pickup Location” button.
    • You will need to confirm your selection on the screen that appears.
    • You will be given the option to pay with any Uber credit that you may have on your account. This option is turned on by default.
  5. Image titled Use Uber Step 9
Wait in front of your exact street address for your ride. Do not go back in if your car is coming and do not walk to an alternate location as your driver will not know where you are and will lose valuable time (yours) searching for you. You will be given an estimation on how long your car will take to show up. If there was no car available, try again in a few minutes, as a driver may have dropped their passengers off and become available.
    • The Uber app will provide you with the phone number of your driver. You can use this contact the driver if you have any special considerations.
    • If you need to cancel your reservation, you will be charged a $5-$10 fee if you cancel after five minutes.
    • Average pickup times vary by city, time, and amount of business.

Know the rates. Uber charges are based on a combination of time and distance. If the car is travelling under 11 mph (18 km/h), you will be charged by the minute, and if you are travelling over 11 mph (18 km/h), you will be charged by the mile. You will also have to pay a base rate, that varies by location.
    • This does not apply to the taxi service, as these fares are set by independent cab operators.
    • Fares are different in every city, so be sure to check the Uber website or use an online fare estimator. All cities have a minimum fare.
  7. Image titled Use Uber Step 11
Don’t pay in cash. All fare payments are handled automatically by the Uber service and your credit card on file. If using the TAXI service, you can select the amount to be tipped through your Uber Payment Settings - the default is 20%. You do not need to tip the other Uber services, including UberX, but tips are appreciated. Note there is no tip included in your payment for any service other than Uber TAXI.
    • You can change the default tip for taxi service in the Uber website. Log in and open the Billing section to change the default tip. Be aware a 4 star rating or smaller will damage your driver and make fewer drivers available the next time you call. Uber only recognizes a 5 star rating as a positive one. Any number less than 5 may harm your driver's service.
  8. Image titled Use Uber Step 12
Get a car through the website or via SMS. If you don’t have access to the Uber app, you can request a car through the Uber mobile site or by texting your pickup address and city to UBR222.

  • You can cancel your request by texting “Cancel” to UBR-CAB (827-222). Cancel within 2 minutes of sending your request in order to avoid a cancellation fee of $10.
  • Uber currently operates in the cities listed on this page:
  • Your Uber fare includes a 20% tip when you take UberTAXI, a partnership between Uber and existing taxi services. But if you're riding in an UberX, UberBlack, or UberSUV vehicle, there's no way to include a tip for your driver.
    • These UberTAXI drivers do not work specifically for Uber, but pay a percentage to Uber so that they get listed.
