How to Use the wikiHow Copyedit Greenhouse

Do you have a knack for fixing grammar, spelling, and other mistakes? One of the most helpful ways to improve wikiHow is to copyedit articles. While you can copyedit any article on wikiHow using the normal "editing" function, the wikiHow's Copyediting Article Greenhouse tool is the way to find articles marked in need of copyediting.

Steps

Read through the given article quickly, to see what kind of copyediting issues it has and whether you can fix them. Make sure you understand what it's saying; if you don't, it will be much harder to determine how to fix any errors.

Click "Yes, Edit this Article" in the top right if you feel that you can fix the problems.

Scroll down to the article and fix all the errors. Make sure you consider spelling, punctuation, capitalization, and grammar. Remove any personal references (me, I, my, etc.) and consider editing the formatting, if necessary, too.
    • Use the wikiHow Writer's Guide and How to Copyedit a wikiHow Article as references while you work.
    • Double check any spellings or grammar rules you're not sure of by searching online.

Double check how it looks when you're done. Click on "Preview" to see it looks how you intended. If there are any mistakes, scroll down to the editing area to fix them.
    • Remember that previewing is not the same as publishing or saving your work.

    Click the "Publish" button.
    • If, while working on an article, you decide that you can't fix the problems after all, you can click the "Cancel" link to skip this article without publishing any changes.

Decide whether the article should have its copyedit tag removed or not.
    • If you think it's in great shape now, click "Yes".
    • If it may still need work, click "No." Your changes will still be saved, but this will give others a chance to notice and work on the article, too.

Tips

  • If you have any problems with the Greenhouse tool, you can find a list of the articles requiring copyediting here.
  • You can select a particular category, at the top underneath the Article Greenhouse title, in order to see only articles in certain topic areas.
  • With most browsers, you can also use keyboard shortcuts to navigate through the tool:
    • Edit: Ctrl+Alt+E
    • Skip: Ctrl+Alt+S
    • Publish: Ctrl+Alt+P
    • Preview: Ctrl+Alt+V
    • Cancel: Ctrl+Alt+C

Warnings

  • Be careful not to click "Yes" to having the copyedit tag removed unless you are sure the article is now in good shape. If in doubt, click "No" and somebody else will review the template removal.
