How to Use the Welcome Wagon Tool on wikiHow

The Welcome Wagon is a tool for personally welcoming and helping new wikiHowians. Although WelcomeBot already welcomes new users, Welcomers are expected to go the extra mile. Examples include greeting newcomers as they join the community, answering their questions when necessary, and giving new editors ideas on how to grow as contributors here.

  1. 1
Become a Welcome Wagon User on wikiHow. You will need to brush up on how to welcome new users on wikiHow and pass the Welcome Wagon test before you gain access to the tool.

Open up the tool. Here, you will find the first user that needs welcoming. You will see "Welcome Wagon for User's Name Here" at the top of the page.

Look at the editor's contributions. Part of being welcoming is understanding what a new contributor did, and making a personal and positive comment on it. You can look at the editor's contributions by clicking on either "Recent" or "Contribs."

Leave the new contributor a positive, personalized message in the comment box. Again, follow as many steps as possible from the welcoming guidelines. Be true, specific, and positive.
    • Remember that welcoming is more about being positive and encouraging than coaching. Feedback is encouraged, but too much of it at once can be overwhelming - do not worry about coaching on every detail in your first welcome message.
    • Go easy on the links. Linking the user to helpful pages is good, but using too many links can be overwhelming. Try to use no more than three links in a welcome message.

Click on "Add Name" if you want to add that user's username in your welcome message. This can help make your welcome more personal. If provided, you can also view the user's real name (not just their username) where it says, "Send (real name/them) a positive personalized message." Feel free to use their first name if provided - this adds a personal touch to your message and shows that you're not a bot!
  6. Image titled 2013 11 09_1155.png
Click on "Add Article," if desired. This adds the most recent article the new contributor created or edited to your welcome message, and is usually done to give specific positive feedback on their most recent edit. If you want to give feedback about a different article/edit, just type it in.
  7. Image titled 2013 11 09_1155_001.png
Click on "Preview" to preview your message before saving. Make sure there are no spelling errors or broken links, and that your message is friendly.

Send your message by clicking on "Send Message." This will send the message to the new contributor and bring up the next person to welcome.

  • Click on "Skip" if you are not sure how to welcome the user, cannot be positive and encouraging about their efforts, or if they are an obvious spammer.
  • Click on "Talk Page" and double check on comments created by someone else. If you want to say the same message another editor has left, rewrite it with an original idea for your message to avoid repetition.
