How to Use PDFs in wikiHow Articles

Two Methods:Basic MethodAdvanced Method

PDF(Portable Document Format) files are a very effective way of storing text and images in a format that ensures they print the same way regardless of the printer or computer you have. They can be used on wikiHow in a variety of ways; for example, you can use them to add detailed plans or schematics to one of your articles in a printer-friendly format. Although PDFs are uploaded in the same fashion as regular images, they are not embedded in your pages in the same way. Instead, follow these instructions to create a link in your article to download the PDF.

Basic Method

  1. Image titled Use PDFs in wikiHow Articles Step 1
    1
Create your PDF using the application of your choice.
    • If you are using a Mac, you can create a PDF simply by choosing "PDF" → "Save as PDF" from the print menu of the application used to create your document.
    • If you are using a Windows PC, you will need additional software, either Adobe Acrobat (not the free Acrobat Reader) or another software package. Follow the steps for your software package.
  2. Image titled Use PDFs in wikiHow Articles Step 2
    2
    Upload the PDF to wikiHow.
  3. Image titled Use PDFs in wikiHow Articles Step 3
    3
Go the image page on wikiHow (you will usually be brought to that page as soon as you upload the image). Even though PDFs are somewhat different than photos or illustrations, they are located in the Image namespace. The image page will have a URL like "http://www.wikihow.com/My_PDF_415.pdf". See this page for a sample PDF: .

Use one of these techniques for the easiest ways to add a PDF to an article:
    • To create a simple link the PDF's image page, just add this name of your PDF's image page in brackets like: "". The link in the previous step is an example of this.
    • To create a link to the PDF image page with a different name, just begin add a colon inside the brackets and then make a normal wiki-link like this "[[:Image:Your PDF Page.pdf|Your link name here]]. Here is a link to the sample PDF page using that technique: Link to sample PDF page.

Be aware that these methods may be confusing to readers who may not know how to download a PDF from the image page. Consider adding additional information about how to do so, or consider using the advanced technique described below to add a link to directly download the PDF from a wikiHow article page.

Method 2
Advanced Method

This explains how to create a link in a wikiHow article that will allow readers to download a PDF directly from an article page.

  1. Image titled Use PDFs in wikiHow Articles Step 7

  2. Image titled Use PDFs in wikiHow Articles Step 8

  3. Image titled Use PDFs in wikiHow Articles Step 9
    3
Right-click on the blue link for the PDF that is directly below the red PDF symbol.
  4. Image titled Use PDFs in wikiHow Articles Step 10
    4

  5. Image titled Use PDFs in wikiHow Articles Step 11
    5
Edit your article and paste the full link into single brackets. This process is just like adding an external link. For example:
    • Typing code like this - [http://www.wikihow.com/images/4/49/Sample-PDF-Page-675.pdf Direct link to PDF download]
    • Makes a link like this - Direct link to PDF download
  6. Image titled Use PDFs in wikiHow Articles Step 12
    6
Preview and save your page. Test your links to make sure everything works properly.

Tips

  • If you are comfortable doing so, using the advanced method can make for a smoother browsing experience for readers.
  • PDFs can be an effective way to provide large scale images to augment smaller images used in articles.

Warnings

  • If using the advanced technique, be sure that you have the entire file path correct or the download will not work.

Things You'll Need

  • Computer software capable of creating PDFs (see Step 1 for more information)
