How to Update the Xbox

Every once in a while, Microsoft releases Xbox updates to provide users with access to new features and to fix major known software issues with the Xbox system. Updating your Xbox can often resolve certain error messages and bugs, and allow you to take advantage of new features and games. There are currently several methods you can use to update your Xbox.
Steps
Method 1 Using Xbox Live (Requires Xbox Internet Connection)
- 1Power on your television and Xbox console.
- 2Press the “Guide” button located in the center of your Xbox controller.
- 3Scroll to and select “Settings.”
- 4Select “System Settings.”
- 5Select “Network Settings.”
- 6Select the name of the Internet network your Xbox is connected to.
- 7Select “Test Xbox Live Connection.” Your Xbox will run a test to verify the Internet connection and search for any new Microsoft updates.
- 8Select “Yes” when prompted to update your Xbox. Any new Xbox updates will be applied directly to your system.[1]
Method 2 Using a USB Flash Drive
- 1Insert a USB flash drive into a USB port on your computer.
- 2Navigate to the Xbox USB update file at http://www.xbox.com/system-update-usb.
- 3Select the option to save the zip file to your computer. The zip file is sized at 110 MB.
- 4Navigate to the zip file on your computer and open or unzip the file.
- 5Copy all zip files to the main root directory of your USB flash drive.
- 6Remove the USB flash drive from your computer.
- 7Insert the USB flash drive into a USB port on your Xbox console.
- 8Power on or restart your Xbox console. Your Xbox will read the files on your USB flash drive upon startup.
- 9Select “Yes” when prompted to update your Xbox console. Any new Xbox updates will now be applied to your system.
Method 3 Using a CD or DVD
- 1Power on your computer.
- 2Navigate to the Xbox USB update file at http://www.xbox.com/system-update-cd.
- 3Click on “Save” when prompted to save the zip file to your computer.
- 4Navigate to the zip file on your computer and unzip the file.
- 5Insert a blank writable CD or DVD disc into the disc drive of your computer.
- 6Copy all contents of the zip file to the main root directory of your CD or DVD disc.
- Select the option to write or burn the files to your disc if prompted to do so.
- 7Remove the CD or DVD from your computer after the files have finished copying to the disc.
- 8Insert the CD or DVD disc into the game disc drive of your Xbox console.
- 9Power on or restart your Xbox console. Your Xbox will automatically read the contents of your CD or DVD disc.
- 10Select “Yes” when prompted to update your Xbox software. Any new updates will be applied to your Xbox immediately.
Tips
- Your Xbox will update automatically if you insert a game into the disc drive that contains newer software than that which is installed on your Xbox. Select “Yes” at the prompt when an Xbox game requires that you update your console software.
Warnings
- If you are using an Xbox that has been modified or “flashed,” updating your Xbox using the methods in this article may return your Xbox back to the default stock settings. Keep in mind that any custom changes you have made to your Xbox may be wiped at the time you update the software.
