How to Unmerge a wikiHow Page

Occasionally, articles on distinct topics are accidentally merged together. Here is how to unmerge them:

  1. 1
Find the title you wish to unmerge, such as Skip Rope.
  2. 2
Determine the redirect of your title using either of these methods.
    • Using title capitalization case, add your title to the URL bar at the top of a page, such as:
    • Search for the exact spelling of your title, such as "skip rope".
    • In this example, Skip Rope redirects to Jump Rope.
  3. 3
Click on "What Links Here" in the column to the right of the Jump Rope page.
  4. 4
Look for the redirect page of Skip Rope:
  5. 5
Click on Skip Rope (redirect page) to be taken to
  6. 6
Click on the History and Discussion tabs to find reasons it was redirected.
  7. 7
Click on the best earlier version found on the History page.
  8. 8
Click on Publish, at the bottom of the page, to unmerge.
  9. 9
Write a new high-quality, distinct page to bring it up to wikiHow standards.

  • Prior to 2007, the Merge policy stated that distinct topics should not be moved. Occasionally, pages are retitled to reflect changing content. In either case, it is acceptable to unmerge a page as long as you write a new high-quality, distinct page.
  • This technique is also useful to re-title a high-quality page with a more concise, more commonly searched title. For example, let's assume "Play Chess" was redirected to "Play Chess With a Computer". Then, a page entitled "Play Chess the Common Way" was created. The redirect would then be removed, so the new page could be given the more concise, more commonly searched title of "Play Chess".

  • Unmerging pages that the community generally feels should be merged is considered counter-productive and frowned upon.
