How to Turn Off a Mac Screen
Two Methods:Keyboard Shortcut MethodHot Corner Method
If you want to turn off the display of a Mac but leave the computer running, it's easy with a few keystrokes. Doing this will turn the screen black and put it to sleep but leave the Mac on.
Steps
Method 1 Keyboard Shortcut Method
Method 2 Hot Corner Method
- 1Go to System Preferences. Select "Desktop & Screen Saver".
- 2Click on the Screen Saver tab and then Hot Corners.
- 3Change one of the hot corners to Put Display to Sleep.
- 4Activate the hot corner you selected by moving your mouse to the corner of the screen you selected. In the example above, you would move the cursor to the bottom right of the screen and leave it there for a few seconds. The screen would then turn off.
Tips
- Since the screen uses a large amount of power, turning it off when not in use will save battery life on a laptop.
- Putting your display to sleep can make your computer more secure. If you change your security setting to require a password immediately when the screensaver launches, your computer will require a password every time you try to re-activate your screen.
