    1
Build a preliminary birdhouse on a flat surface. To get an idea of what the birdhouse will look like before you make it permanent, build a makeshift one on a table. Hold the cups and plates around the area you’d like to suspend, to get a visual.
    • You may want to have the teacup sitting inside a saucer so take that into consideration when building your early bird feeder.

Mark the places for drilling. Use the magic marker to make small dots on the place where you will drill.
    • There will need to be either three or four evenly spaced holes to hold the hanging chains in place. See the images for a guide.

Carefully drill the holes into the teacup and saucer, following the guide marks. If you're new to using a drill, have someone experienced show you what to do when drilling a delicate object.
    • Follow the instructions on how to use the drill, taking safety precautions such as wearing goggles and gloves.

Add a hook at the top of the chain. This will let you attach the birdhouse to a tree or a hook hanging off the eaves of your home.

Add bird food before hanging. Add only a small amount of food to avoid a build-up of old food in the event birds are slow to come to your feeder. And be aware that it may take a little time for birds to realize where the “hot new restaurant” in town is located.
