How to Train a Dog to Sit and Shake Hands

Dogs are very intelligent creatures. They can do various tricks. Two of the most popular tricks are "sit" and "shake hands". The dog sits on its hindquarters and sticks out its paws for you to shake.

Method 1
Sit

    Take your dog somewhere that is free of distractions. Be sure to bring a pocketful of treats with you.

    Face the dog.

    Get a treat. Hold it above your dog's nose. Most dogs will automatically lower their back end at this point.

    Say "SIT" in a calm, but stern voice.
    • If your dog sits, praise them extensively and give them the treat.

    • If your dog cranes its neck or jumps instead of sitting, put the treat back in your pocket. Then, try again, this time using your hand to push your dog's back end into the sitting position. Be sure to say SIT as your dog is sitting. Once they are sitting, give praise and reward them with the treat.

    Repeat five or six more times. Then, take a break.

    Try again later. Continue this pattern until the dog sits consistently. Then, slowly scale back on the treats until you are giving only praise as a reward.

Method 2
Shake

    Tell your dog to sit.

    Say "PAW" (or "SHAKE") in a calm but stern voice. Immediately after doing so, lift your dog's paw with your hand. Praise extensively and give your dog a treat.

    Release your dog's paw and repeat five or six times. Then, take a break.
