How to Tie Hira Obi for Yukata

Yukata is a traditional Japanese summer clothing. It is considered as summer Kimono or casual kimono. Obi is a sash for Yukata. This is the most basic way to tie an Obi.

Steps

    Take about 16" or an arm's length from one Obi end and fold it in half (vertically).Hold this end on your left. Hold the other side on your right.

    While holding left end, wrap the Obi around the waist 2 times.

    Fold the right end to make a triangle shape. It should be narrower towards left.

    Tie Left and Right together. Make sure to tie the way which the Left will come up.

    Bring Left to the upper center and bring vertical line.

    Open up the Right.

    Bring the Right from the center to the right and fold to the front.

    Decide the Bow (Ribbon) length and fold in the rest.

    Bring down the Left over the folded Right. Slide the Left underneath the Right in the center.

    Pull up the Left behind the Right.

    Roll up the Left end towards you.

    Insert the rolled up Left behind the Obi. Fix the Ribbon shape.

    While exhaling, move the bow towards the back (clockwise).

Tips

  • You may have to wrap the Obi around your waist more or less depends on the length of the Obi and your body shape.
  • Make sure to check the bow shape after moving it to the back.
