A Prusik knot or triple sliding hitch is a friction hitch used to put a loop of cord around a rope so that the rope can be climbed. It's mostly used in climbing, canyoneering, mountaineering, and caving. [1]The Prusik is a slide-and-grip knot and for best results, apply load evenly in both directions. [2]
Steps
-
1
Take a cord (or Prusik loop) and form a bight (loop) underneath the rope you want to append it to. http://pad3.whstatic.com/images/thumb/8/8c/Tie-a-Prusik-Knot-Step-1-preview-Version-2.jpg/550px-Tie-a-Prusik-Knot-Step-1-preview-Version-2.jpg

2
Loop the cord over itself and over the rope. Pull it through. Make sure that the rest of the cord goes
inside the bight.

Repeat the previous step 3-5 times, depending on the thickness of your cord. http://pad3.whstatic.com/images/thumb/e/e4/Tie-a-Prusik-Knot-Step-3-preview-Version-2.jpg/550px-Tie-a-Prusik-Knot-Step-3-preview-Version-2.jpg

When you're satisfied with your loops, bring the rope through the bight one more time, but this time – instead of pulling the cord through – tighten it. http://pad3.whstatic.com/images/thumb/a/a7/Tie-a-Prusik-Knot-Step-4-preview-Version-2.jpg/550px-Tie-a-Prusik-Knot-Step-4-preview-Version-2.jpg

Pull it in various directions to add tension to the rope: - Applying downwards tension allows the knot to keep tight.

- No tension lets the knot slide loosely up and down the rope.
