How to Test if a Dish Is Microwave Safe

Some dishes say they can be microwaved and some don't, and then you can't microwave your food. This is a predicament many people have encountered. So this is a little test to prove if your dishes are microwaveable.

Steps

    Fill a microwave-safe cup or mug with cold water.

    Place the plate in question in the microwave.

    Place the mug of water in the microwave, along with the questionable plate.

    Microwave on high for 15 seconds.

    When it is done, carefully feel the plate and the mug. If the plate is hot and the mug is cold, the plate is not microwave-safe. If the opposite occurs, which is the case with most plates, continue.

    Repeat the above steps, microwaving for 30 seconds.

    Repeat the above steps, microwaving for 1 minute.

    If the the plate has remained cold, it is likely microwave-safe.

Tips

  • Some plates or mugs will say "microwave-safe" on the bottom or on a price tag.
  • Pressing 'Start' often sets the microwave to 1 minute.

Warnings

  • Don't attempt to microwave any dishes with metallic designs or trim.
  • Don't do this with valuable or cherished china.
