How to Test a Pottery Glaze Using a Mortar and Pestle

Testing a pottery glaze is an important part of ensuring consistency, color, and resilience. There are a number of ways to test a glaze; this one is very simple and provided you're not too fussed about absolute accuracy, this is a good one for using when doing a large area.

Steps

    Weigh the dry glaze ingredients into the mortar and pestle.

    Mix the ingredients with a wooden or plastic spatula.

    Add water. Mix constantly and be sure to scrape in any thick parts forming on the edge of the mortar bowl.

    Continue mixing. When you can see that the ingredients have formed a creamy consistency and you've managed to disintegrate any large lumps, use the pestle to grind down any remaining lumps.

    Keep grinding until the glaze is smooth.

    Dip the test piece in the glaze. Check it for consistency, color, and overall appearance. Be sure to do all of this under good lighting.
