How to Teach a Rat to Walk a Rope

Rats are very intelligent animals and can be trained to do a range of tricks and useful things. If you'd like your pet rat to walk a rope, the following tutorial will help you to teach it to to walk over a rope from a set height.

  1. 1
Get some rope. The rope should be half an inch longer than your rat.
  2. 2
Stretch the rope between your hands. Hold the rope (and your hands) near the ground, so that the rat has a safe landing, if needed.
  3. 3
Get one of your rat's favorite treats. Lay it on one of your hands.
  4. 4
Get a friend to place your rat on the opposite hand. Your rat should be able to smell and see the treat.
  5. 5
Encourage your rat to step on the rope. It should be able to reach the treat.
  6. 6
Let the rat nibble the treat. Then repeat the last steps to train the rat to keep using the rope to reach the treat.
  7. 7
Once your rat is confident about getting on and walking on the rope, repeat the exercise with the string one inch (2.5cm) longer.
  8. 8
Place the rope higher. Once the rat is happily walking a 29 inch (73.7 cm) rope, increase the height of the drop. You can also make the rope thinner.
  9. 9
Keep training the rat. Soon your rat will be a great tightrope walker!

  • Start with a thick rope and gradually make it thinner.
  • Give the rat a ten minute break every 3 minutes.
  • If it gets bored, put it back in its home and try again later.

  • Only do this with well trained rats who won't panic too much.
  • Always be careful to make sure your rat doesn't fall off.
