How to Switch from Free Feeding Your Pet

When you 'free feed' your pet, you basically put your pet's portion control in his paws. If your dog is young, healthy, and active, this isn't so bad. But if your pet is more sedentary or inactive, you might want to consider portion control.

  • This article assumes you have more than one pet.

If you are on the fence, take a look at your pets. Don't assume because one is skinny, that the others are fine. His metabolism is better, is all. Don't assume your pet knows when to stop. He doesn't.

Tips

  • Be prepared to find you have gone through the day without feeding your pet. Since you are no longer 'throwing down food' for them to eat at their leisure, you need to be more diligent about feeding them. Try to feed them at the same time everyday.
  • Be aware that your pet may not be able to make a sudden adjustment. Try going into it slowly. Get him used to eating less.
