How to Survive in Dangerous Parts of a City


Sometimes, when traveling, you are bound to get into someplace tourists are not supposed to go. Maybe you took a wrong turn, maybe you misunderstood some directions, but the fact is you are in a dangerous urban area. What to do now?

    Don't dress like a rich person if you can. Wear flip-flops, old t-shirts and loose shorts. Don't wear chains, earrings or anything like that. Avoid anything that makes it worth robbing you.

    Don't carry expensive items with you (such as a camera, laptop computer, etc).

    Know where you're heading or pretend you do. If you look like you're lost and there are thugs around, the chances they mug you are greater.

    Don't talk to anyone unless you are fluent in their language. If people start talking to you (perhaps to sell something), just keep walking.
    • You might have to stop for directions. If you do, try to ask an elderly person, preferably a woman, because there is less of a chance an older person will try to rob or attack you.

    If you do get mugged, and the mugger wants something from you, like your shoes or your cash, don't argue, just give it to them. This can save your life.

    Don't panic if you see a gun or a knife. Don't try to act overly tough either. Just stay calm, and do whatever they ask of you. Try to leave as soon as possible.

    If you get the chance to go away, just walk. Don't run, just walk a bit fast.

    Don't try to hide things unless you are a good liar, and are absolutely sure the thieves don't know you have it. If they ask for your cell phone, just give it to them.

Tips

  • Avoid unlit streets and places at night.
  • Before entering a street or an alley, look for suspicious persons.
  • If you have friends where you are, ask which streets are safer.
  • Don't look and act like a tourist.

Warnings

  • Try to stay away from suspicious people.
  • Never try to fight back if you are mugged. If the muggers are armed, you may be injured or killed.
