Imagine that you are playing fetch with your dog. You throw the toy and your dog comes back but will not drop it. Take hold of the toy in one hand and gently hold the dog's collar in the other. Do not pull on the toy. Say "drop it" one time and wait.

Keep hold of it for as long as it takes. Eventually, the dog will get bored and let go.

When the dog lets go of the toy praise him or her a lot and then throw the toy again. If you do this enough when the dog comes back the toy will be on the ground before you can even say "drop it".

For some dogs, you can place a food treat in front of the dog's nose just after you say "Drop it". When the dog lets go, immediately say "Yes!" and offer the dog the treat. This will not work well for dogs who strongly prefer toys - they'd rather hold on to the toy - OR for dogs who strongly prefer food treats over toys - as they will no longer be as interested in playing fetch.

Tips

  • You can teach an old dog new tricks, it just takes a while.

Warnings

  • Some dogs will move around with the toy to keep you from getting hold of it.
