How to Sponsor a Poor Child with Children International

Since 1936, Children International has worked tirelessly to ease the burdens poverty places upon poor children. Today, our most urgent effort is to protect as many children as possible from the ravages of extreme poverty. We have found that the most effective way to do this is through one-to-one sponsorship. When you sponsor a child through Children International, you have a direct and positive impact on that child’s life. Many sponsorships develop into meaningful, lifelong relationships.

    Choose Your Child: The most important step of sponsorship is choosing the child you would like to help. Here are some things you may want to consider: Age: Would you like to help a young child or a teenager who might be having a harder time finding a sponsor?     Set Up Your Online Account The best way to get the most out of your sponsorship is to create your own account on You’ll be able to view current and past pictures of your sponsored child, write letters to them, make donations, and learn more about their daily life through your online account.     Communicate With Your Child You can ensure a satisfying sponsorship experience by developing a relationship with your child. Be sure to respond to their letters. Answer their questions, tell them about yourself, and send them pictures. These children are so excited to receive letters and photos from their sponsors. You can also stay engaged by asking your child specific questions about their life. Mark their birthday and other special days on your calendar and keep them in your thoughts when those days approach. Think about how you might be able to help your child achieve his or her goals. The more you and your sponsored child know about each other, the easier it becomes to develop a friendship. And when you see the positive changes you’re making in your child’s life, that friendship will turn into one of the most rewarding experiences you’ll ever have.

    Get other people involved Now that you’re a sponsor, you might wonder how you can have an even greater impact on child poverty. The answer is easy: by recruiting more people to sponsor a child through Children International. Creating your own webpage allows you to multiply the amount of children you can help.


  • Choose the organization with less operating cost and maintaining its sponsorship program. This will help actually the needed child as popular organization have heavy operating cost of maintaining their programs.
  • Get involved with other sponsors. This is one of the best ways to stay active. Join our Google group online, or find out if there’s a Children International Friends Group in your area.
  • Write your child. Impoverished children need encouragement, and your letters give them just that. You can develop a long-lasting friendship and do your child a lot of good by writing often.
  • Visit your child. Sponsor visits are an important aspect of our program. When you choose the location of the child you would like to sponsor, think about which country you might someday want to visit.

  • Select your target country like Uganda , Nepal, India. Choose the best country for sponsoring on where your small amount can have higher influences
  • If you've small budget than sponsoring to the country like Nepal would help.: Because the currency value of developing countries are low and even your small contribution can have higher usability.
  • Visit the portfolio of the organization on which you're going to give your donation. This help you judge the previous work of that organization and get an ideas about how they've used individual donation
  • Contact direct through mail and phone to the organization and prospective child. Establishing a direct communication channel is the great way to have correct information.
  • Collect the link for sponsor a child, so you can choose the prospective child to sponsor.
  • Force organization to give information on current changes and performance of child in learning. Always ask organization for the result and talk with sponsored child about how the organization is helping him/her.


  • Pace yourself. The more you learn about global poverty, the more the scope of the problem can become overwhelming. Remember, you can’t save every poor child out there – but you can focus on lifting one child out of their circumstances and helping them realize their dreams.
  • Be patient. It may take some time to receive your first letter from your sponsored child. Because our sponsorship program allows you to communicate directly with one specific child, most letters have to be translated and mailed internationally.
