How to Sharpen Crayon Points

Five Methods:With Hot WaterWith an Electric Crayon SharpenerWith a Manual Crayon SharpenerWith a KnifeWith Sandpaper

Crayons that become blunt can be refashioned into a sharper point again easily with a little hot water. Here is how.

Method 1
With Hot Water

    1
Dip the blunt crayon end into a bowl of hot water. Leave it for a few minutes. If you don't fancy holding it in place, tie it to a piece of string which ties onto a pencil. Place two piles of books either side of the bowl and rest the pencil across the books, with the crayon string dangling into the bowl just far enough that the tip only is in the hot water.

    Remove after a few minutes.

Shape the tip back again with your fingers.

Method 2
With an Electric Crayon Sharpener

    1
Purchase a crayon sharpener. This is similar to an electrical pencil sharpener.
  2. Image titled Sharpen Crayon Points Step 5
    2
Put the tip of the crayon in and let it grind away until it is sharp. It is quick and takes less effort than the method above, if you are able to obtain this item.

Method 3
With a Manual Crayon Sharpener

  1. Image titled Sharpen Crayon Points Step 6
    1
    Purchase a manual crayon sharpener.
  2. Image titled Sharpen Crayon Points Step 7
    2
Sharpen the crayon the same way you would sharpen a pencil in a manual sharpener.

Method 4
With a Knife

  1. Image titled Sharpen Crayon Points Step 8
    1
Get a knife and crayon. The knife doesn't have to be super sharp -- a butter knife will do.
  2. Image titled Sharpen Crayon Points Step 9
    2
Glide the knife on the tip of the crayon, going back and forth. Be careful not to hurt yourself!
    • Cutting from the base of the crayon to the tip is easiest, though you can also try working from side to side.

Method 5
With Sandpaper

  1. 1
Place the crayon tip on sandpaper at an angle.
  2. 2
Rub back and forth until it's sharpened. Turn the crayon as necessary to sand off each side and form a point.
