How to Sew a Catnip Mouse

Catnip mice can keep a cat entertained for years. Even better, you can make them easily at home for a fraction of the cost of a store-bought catnip mouse. With less than half an hour of time and a few simple materials, you can have your cat toy ready for fun!

Steps

    Fold the felt square in half.

    Draw half a heart on the square using the chalk. The wide section of the heart should touch the outer edge of the felt, and the tip should touch the bottom end of the felt, right on the fold.

    Cut along the line. When you unfold the felt, you should have a heart shape.

    Fold the heart again and begin to sew up the edges, starting at the point, using a blanket stitch or whip stitch.

    When you are 2/3 done, stuff the mouse with the dried catnip.

    Finish sewing, so that the mouse is a little bag. When you put in the last stitches, sew in the heavy twine to make a "tail".

    Use the fabric paint to add eyes and whiskers, if desired. Let dry.

Warnings

  • Make sure the threads are sewed securely. Otherwise, the cat can harm itself by ingesting the thread.

  • 4 x 4 inch square of felt

  • 3 in (6 cm) Heavy twine
  • 2 ft (60cm). medium weight sewing thread
  • Needle
  • Fabric paint (optional)
