How to Set Up Voicemail on an iPhone

Three Parts:Setting Up VoicemailUsing VoicemailTroubleshooting Voicemail

Do you have a brand new iPhone? The first thing you’ll want to do is configure your voicemail. This will allow people to leave you messages, and let you change your greeting from the boring standard one. To setup voicemail on your iPhone, you will need to setup your inbox through your carrier, and then configure Visual Voicemail to retrieve your messages.

Part 1
Setting Up Voicemail

Follow the voice prompts to set up your inbox (if asked). Depending on your carrier or plan, you may be taken through the initial voicemail setup process using an automated menu. Follow the prompts to set a password and record a greeting. If your iPhone doesn't call your voicemail service, move on to the next step.
    • If you're prompted for a voicemail password that you don't remember, contact your carrier to have it reset.
  4. 4
Tap the "Set Up Now" button (if available). If your plan supports Visual Voicemail, you'll see the Set Up Now button. Tap this to begin the voicemail setup.
  5. 5
Create a password for your voicemail. The length of this password varies depending on the carrier. For example, Verizon requires a 4-6 digit password, while AT&T requires a 4-15 digit password.
    • You'll be asked to enter your new password again to confirm it.
  6. 6
Tap "Custom" to record a new greeting, or "Default" to use your carrier default greeting. If you tap "Custom," you'll be prompted to record a new greeting. You'll be able to review the recording before accepting it.[1]
    • Tap "Record" to begin recording the greeting, and "Stop" to finish.
    • Tap "Save" once you're satisfied.

Update your iPhone to the latest version of iOS. There may be a bug that's causing your voicemail problems, and a more recent version of iOS may have fixed the problem. You can check for updates in the "General" section of the Settings app, or you can use iTunes. See Update iOS for detailed instructions.
    • Also check for any Carrier Updates, which can be found by tapping "About" in the "General" section of the Settings app.
