How to Sculpt Feet in Clay

Most people have a hard time sculpting feet, hands and faces. There is a trick to sculpting toes and feet.

Steps

    Get hold of a very good anatomy book. Study the way that feet are both under the skin and with skin. Look at the bone structure, the muscle structure, and the way that the skin sits over these structures.

    Study your own feet. If you need reference while sculpting, they're very useful!

    Consider purchasing an anatomical foot model. This can help you when sculpting feet by giving you a 3D perspective, as well as being able to take it apart, and feel it.

    Start by molding the general foot shape. Get the easier part of the foot in place before attempting the toes, and the muscle ripples and bone structure.

    Form the heel next.

    Shape the front of the foot where the toes will be.

    Check that everything is in proportion. If too thick, remove clay; if too thin, add more clay in and smear into shape.

    Create the toes. Use a sharp tool to make incisions. Gently pry the toes apart and smooth them into real toe shapes, separate from one another.

    Create toenails. Use a small knife or sculpting tool to create toenails. Take your time as this is painstaking.

    Under the toes, create a small crease for a bend.

Tips

  • Remember, the feet are mostly bone. The toes are angular, and none should be sculpted as straight tubes. They should be bony and they flex based on the movement of the body.
