As a family grows, we accumulate more possessions and lose precious floor space. Most of our essential items of furniture, cabinets and shelves can do double duty when installed in the right way. Learn how to save space in your home with creative home hacks.

Method 1
Space-Saving Storage

    Replace ottoman, coffee tables and benches with models that have interior storage. Storage ottomans and benches often cost approximately the same as less functional versions of the same furniture.[1]

    Place bookcases behind the sofa, next to beds and next to furniture. They can double as tables as well as storage.

    Turn a hallway into a storage space. Line it with hooks and hang coats, hats or even pots and pans.

    Install magnetic strips in the kitchen, office, shop or bedroom. Hang metallic objects like knives, office supplies, tools and jewelry on them.[2]

    Hang your bike on the wall to free up your entryway. You can buy a metal wall-mount or a wooden mount that doubles as a bookshelf.

Method 2
Saving Space in the Kitchen

    Create vertical storage for baking sheets, cooking boards and other long, thin kitchen items. Purchase tension rods and align them vertically in rows of two between shelves. Insert the items between the rods to save drawer space.[4]

    Place towel racks horizontally on the back of your kitchen cabinets. Slide lids to pots and pans into the towel racks, where they will be held in place by the center handle.

    Install a shelf two to three feet from the ceiling. A high shelf, securely fastened, can hold cookbooks, platters, bowls or pitchers that you rarely use.

    Cut a piece of pegboard to hang on a kitchen wall. Use metal hangers to hang pots, pans and kitchen utensils along the wall. Paint the pegboard to match your walls or your favorite color.[5]

    Place magnetic strips underneath kitchen cabinets. Suspend metal spice storage containers from them instead of a spice rack.

Saving Space in the Living Room/Bedroom
