How to Roast Walnuts

Walnuts are a great source of antioxidants and heart healthy nutrients, like omega-3's. Roasting walnuts is a great way to enhance their flavor and texture. Try one of these simple roasting methods and you will be enjoying walnuts in no time. Keep them around the house for a great snack.

Method 1
Dry Roasting Walnuts in the Oven

    Preheat the oven. Turn on the oven and set it to 350ºF/180ºC.

    Place walnuts on a cookie sheet or shallow baking pan. Line the pan with parchment paper or kitchen foil. Put the nuts on the pan in a single layer.
    • If you don't have parchment paper or foil you can just put the walnuts right on the pan.

    Roast the walnuts. Put the pan in the oven for 8 to 10 minutes. Check the walnuts frequently to make sure they don't burn.

    Remove the walnuts. Take the baking pan out of the oven after 8 to 10 minutes or when the nuts are golden brown.

Method 2
Roasting Walnuts in the Oven with Oil

    Preheat the oven. Turn on the oven and set it to 350ºF/180ºC.

    Choose an oil. Use walnut oil to add additional walnut flavor or pick any neutral oil like grapeseed oil or vegetable oil.
    • Try using olive oil to add a different flavor.

    Toss the walnuts in a small amount of oil. Use just enough oil to coat the nuts evenly. Start with one teaspoon of oil and add more as needed.

    Put the walnuts on a cookie sheet or shallow baking pan. Arrange the nuts on the pan in a single layer.

Method 3
Roasting Walnuts on the Stove Top

    Heat a large frying pan over medium-high heat. Use a pan that is thick and heavy so that it conducts heat evenly. A thin pan may cause the nuts to burn before they are roasted through.

    Add the walnuts. Put the walnuts in the hot dry pan. Stir them constantly to avoid burning.

    Roast the nuts for about five minutes. When the nuts are golden brown they are done roasting.

    Remove the walnuts. Take the walnuts off the heat once they are golden brown.

Method 4
Roasting Spiced Walnuts

    Preheat the oven. Turn on the oven and set it to 300ºF/150ºC.

    Beat one egg white. Separate an egg white from the yolk and discard the yolk. Put the egg white in a small bowl and beat it with a whisk or fork until it is frothy.

    Choose spices. Pick your favorite mix of spices and add them to the beaten egg white.
    • Try using a pinch each of allspice, cumin, and chili powder.
    • Add curry to make curried walnuts.
    • Use sugar and cinnamon to make sweet roasted nuts.
    • Dry herbs work great too, try rosemary with walnuts.

    Toss the walnuts in the egg white mixture. Add the nuts to the egg whites and stir until they are coated.

    Spread the nuts on a baking pan. Put the nuts on a baking pan and spread them out so that they are in a single even layer.
