How to Repurpose a Datebook Into an Earring Storage Book

Not digging the whole earring tree or find that your earrings get lost inside the jewelry box? If you are looking for a snappy organizer that goes with your neat and tidy lifestyle create an earring holder inside an old organizer or date book. To hold earrings, you’ll need to cover inside pages with thin cardboard and felt--creating this storage book is a snap.
Steps
Method 1 Deciding How Large to Make Your Earring Storage Book
- 1Decide how many “pages” you’ll need to store your earring collection. You need to be certain that your earring supply will fit inside the book you choose.
- Assess your collection and consider both how many earring pairs you have and how you will categorize your earrings (studs on one or two pages, hoops on another, etc.).
- For clunky earrings or earrings with considerable girth, store in a large box instead of trying to cram them in the book.
- 2Locate a suitable old planner, organizer or date book. Once you're certain of the size required, choose a book that meets this need. The book must be in good condition and needs to be one that you can re-use.
- Look for a sturdy cover and binding. An old organizer that is worn or misshapen won’t work very well for this project.
- Make sure you are truly finished using the planner before transforming it into your earring storage case.
Method 2 Creating the Dividers in the Earring Storage Book
- 1Bind the pages together. Based on the number of pages you’ll need, divide out the book's pages and bind with paper or binder clips.
- Make sure you clump an even number of pages together throughout the book. To ensure evenness, clip on both the bottom and the top of the pages (and on the side if necessary).
- 2Smooth out any wrinkles from pages. If the pages won't smooth, you can try lightly misting them with water and close book for several hours if pages.
- 3Glue the pages together using the hot glue gun. Place a drop or two of glue along the perimeter of each page and hold together until each bound page division is held together.
- Press down carefully with your hand to ensure the pages are bound together and smooth over the front and back page.
- 4Repeat the process until you have the desired number of pages for your earring storage book.
Method 3 Strengthening the Book
Cardboard will be fitted to the inside pages of your organizer to strengthen the earring holding pages. Then it is covered with felt or burlap (which will be used to hold earrings in place).
- 1Measure one inside page. You can use these measurements for the entire inside of the book.
- 2Create a page template with one piece of the light cardboard using the measurements.
- 3Create the first page by cutting out two pieces of cardboard and two pieces of felt or burlap. You will need a piece of fitted cardboard for the front and back page, followed by a piece of felt or burlap for the front and back.
- 4Glue the cardboard on the pages. Apply a generous amount of glue to the page and hold the cardboard in place. Allow time for the cardboard to dry before gluing the felt or burlap in place.
Method 4 Adding the Felt Liners
Method 5 Add Earrings and Use
- 1Push the earring post through the felt or burlap until it is held in place. If the earring has a backing, add it on the other side.
- 2Line hanging earrings toward the top of the book and studs/smaller earrings toward the bottom (so they don’t hang down beyond the cover).
- 3Store the book along with your jewelry or maintain it secretly in your bookshelf––no one will know it's your earrings!
- 4Finished.
Tips
- Create a smaller version of this organizer to be used for travel.
- Include a small pouch (you can glue it to the back) that can be used for errant backings or a place to store broken earrings that you need repaired.
