The “search here” browser tab is part of a program known as “Search Results,” which displays ads and sponsored links in your list of search results when using Google, Yahoo, or any other search engine. The “search here” tab can be removed by uninstalling related programs in Windows, and by restoring your Internet browser to its default settings.

Method 1
Uninstalling Search Here from Windows

    Click on “Start” and select “Control Panel.
    • If using Windows 8, right-click at the bottom left corner of your screen and select “Control Panel.”

    Click on “Uninstall a program” under Programs.

    Scroll through the list of programs installed on your computer to identify any unknown programs. Programs associated with the “search here” browser tab are BrowserDefender, DefaultTab, SelectionLinks, and Mixi DJ Chrome Toolbar.

    Click on each unknown program and select the option to uninstall. Search Results and all related programs will be uninstalled from your computer, but you will still be required to change your Internet browser settings to fully remove the “search here” browser tab.[1]

Method 2
Removing Search Here from Chrome

    Click on the Chrome menu button displayed at the top right corner of your Chrome browser session.

    Click on “Extensions” in the left sidebar of the Chrome settings menu.

    Click on the trash can icon located to the right of “DefaultTab.

    Point to Google or your preferred search engine, and click on “Make default.

    Click on “Reset Firefox” again to confirm that you want your browser returned to default settings. Your browser will reset, and the “search here” tab will no longer display.

Tips

  • Select the “custom installation” option when installing new programs and software to your Windows computer. The “Search Results” program is often bundled with other third-party software programs, and will change your browser settings and preferences upon installation.
  • Read and review all terms and conditions when downloading third-party applications and software to your computer. In most cases, you can click on “Decline offer” instead of “I accept” when downloading software to opt out of installing unwanted programs such as “Search Results.”
  • Run updated anti-virus software on your computer at all times to help prevent the installation of malware, viruses, and other forms of malicious software. The “Search Results” program is not classified as malware, but could change your browser settings in a manner that exposes your computer to future malware and virus threats.
