How to Recover Your Livescribe Smartpen's Serial if Your Smartpen Is Broken

This is a simple guide that explains where and how you can find the serial for your echo or pulse Livescribe smartpen if the pen is broken. I found out how to do this on my own while trying to find the serial for my pen to give to Livescribe support.

Steps

    Open Windows Explorer.

    Navigate to the hard drive of your computer.

    Open the folder called Users.

    Open the folder with your user account name.

    Open the folder called AppData (see the tip below).

    Use Notepad to open this file: PenComm.log

    look for a line similar to the following: "[00000000|00:00:00] [000000aa] [pcGetPenId] Pen Handle=2, ID=000000000000, Serial=AAA-AAA-AAA-AA"

    The serial of the pen is the series of letters and dashes after: "Serial="

Tips

  • If you can't find AppData try searching how to enable viewing hidden files and folders.
  • if you don't want to follow one of those guides then you can type %AppData% in windows explorer's address bar (this may or may not work depending on whether or not you use windows XP, windows vista, or windows 7).

Warnings

  • this only works if you use only one smartpen with the computer,if you use more than one then all of those pen's serials will show up in this file somewhere so you won't know which one it is.
