wikiHow to React to a Fire Alarm at School (Kids)
Fire in your school? Stay calm! You should know what to do just in case! Follow these steps to make your way out!
Steps
- 1Know what your fire alarm sounds like. If it is a siren, or it sounds like a smoke detector, you should easily be able to tell the difference between your school bell and alarm. If it is the bell you use, make sure you know what signal it is.
- 2Organise or participate in school fire drills. It is against the law to not have at least four drills in your school year in some locations, so you should abide by the law, or if your school does not have fire drills, request one immediately.
- 3Evacuate the building as soon as the alarm goes! Do not collect your belongings before evacuating; your life is much more important. Stop whatever you are doing and get out and stay out!
- 4If you ever get lost, follow anyone else. You may follow them to your exit.
- 5If you discover a fire, activate the alarm. Either set off the alarm or tell any member of staff immediately. Remember to get out and stay out!
- 6If you get caught up with smoke, get down low, and crawl. If it is crowded, you should squat, just in case you get trampled on. Remember to go fast! okay
- 7Do not hide. Although, you have a natural instinct to hide, DO NOT. Leave the building immediately
- 8Once outside, follow all instructions. Your teacher will tell you what to do.
- 9If there is a risk of explosion, get as far away from the building as possible and face away at all times.
- 10As soon as possible, phone your local fire department.
- 11If it is safe to go back inside, listen for the school bell. Then follow everyone back inside.
- 12Know your fire exits. So in case you were lost in a real fire, you would know where your nearest exit is.
Tips
- If you do not wish to do a fire drill, ask for an alarm test. An alarm test is basically a test that lasts 5-10 seconds to check if the alarm is working.
- Ask your teacher for more advice on fires.
- Most fires can be extinguished with a hose.
Warnings
- Do not go back in unless it is safe to do so.
- Never set off a hoax fire alarm. This can not only get you into serious trouble; when the fire department respond to your false alarm they might not be able to tackle a real fire and save someone's life.
- Nobody's a hero. Never sacrifice yourself. Just keep yourself safe!
