How to Press Ferns

Pressed ferns are a pleasant addition to pressed flower art or can be used in crafts. Pressing ferns can be done in a book, a press, or by using an iron.

Steps

    Collect the fern leaves you'd like to press. Remove dead parts and any dirt.

    Make sure the fern is dry before proceeding.

Method 1
Book method

    Cut out two sheets of wax paper. Make them larger than the piece of fern to be pressed.

    Select a very large book of good weight. Open to the middle of the book. Insert one sheet of wax paper.

    Lay down the fern on the sheet of wax paper. Top with the other sheet. Shut firmly.

    Leave for several weeks. Check regularly, just in case. If you spot moldy growth, remove immediately.

    Remove the fern for use once dried.

Method 2
Iron method

    Cut two sheets of wax paper. Make them larger than the piece of fern to be pressed.

    Place one sheet of wax paper down on the ironing surface with the wax facing the fern.
    • Place the fern onto this sheet.

    • Place the other paper over the fern, again making sure the wax faces the fern.

    Place a couple sheet of paper or paper towel between the ironing board and wax paper to protect the ironing board. Printer paper is fine.

    Heat the iron. If you're using a steam iron, remove the water. Set at a low setting and don't use steam.

    Iron the cloth with the fern underneath. Iron for a minute or two then lift the paper to check its progress. If needed repeat this until your fern is dry.

    Stop ironing. Remove the pressed fern. It will look shiny or not, depending on the type of fern you used.

Tips

  • Keep the iron gently moving so you don't scorch or burn the fern.
  • Pressed ferns can be used in floral pictures, cards, scrapbook decorations, decoupage, and so on.
