Tips

  • Prepare about 2.5 cups (566 grams) of cooked freeze-dried food for every adult for 1 dinner. When you allot food, measure cooked freeze-dried food, as the cooked food contains water and is much heavier after preparation.
  • A package of freeze-dried food will contain everything you need to prepare the food, but some cooks like to enhance the flavor with more spices. Add oregano, thyme, marjoram, onion powder and a seasoned salt and pepper to season the meal to your taste.
  • Plan meals for the entire time you will be camping. If you intend to camp for 4 days, for example, pack enough food for 12 meals per person, plus snacks.

Warnings

  • Avoid freeze-dried dishes that require simmering if bad weather is expected, as the foods may be difficult to cook. If you have a stove, you may be able to simmer freeze-dried meals even if the weather is bad.
