How to Prepare for Living in Student Accomodation

    Contact your university or college for accommodation as soon as possible so you are able to get the most decent accommodations.

    You don't want to arrive and have nothing to eat, storage to organize your belongings and university work, therefore you should make a list of all the things you are intending to bring then what you are going to organize them into. Try to be realistic about what you use everyday to avoid to much clutter in your new room.

    Most students get a money allowance every month either from their parents/guardians, loans or bursaries. So, before you go get them to buy as many items you can that you use regularly like food, shampoo, toothpaste, washing powder, toilet roll etc. so you don't have to waste time going back and forth every time you run out of something and it will save you money in the long run.

    A material laundry bag, as laundry bins could be quite difficult to carry to the student laundry area.

    If you know you have a lot of something for instance shoes, clothes, makeup etc buy something to organize them like boxes, toilet drawers,or a hanging shoe compartment.

    Bring two towels and keep more in a box if you must. ( remember to hang them up once you have showered so they dry).

    Buy anything you need for starting university work then buy box files for your university work to keep it organized.

    Bring your own cleaning supplies (apart from vacuum cleaner, iron and board) and buy cutlery, plates, glasses and bowls that are distinctive and put in your own cupboard after they are cleaned so no one else uses them.

    Before you go take note of some healthy and inexpensive recipes that are easy to make so you aren't just eating fast food etc.

    For the first month try to spend as little money as possible and by the end of the month if you have money left over you will then know how to manage your money responsibly.

    Remember to keep your room clean and organized as this will help in the long run. Also remember other people are living there as well but you don't have to clean up their mess.

    Bring items that remind you of home, photographs, ornaments, gifts etc.

    Buy a laptop to save your work on and go on the internet.

Warnings

  • Apply for accommodation as soon as possible to avoid getting a bad accommodation or no place at all.
  • Ignore others mess and just keep your own stuff tidy, arguing over messy kitchens, shared bathrooms causes fall outs. If the place is very unhygienic you must say something.
  • Don't smoke in your room, even when the detector is covered it can still set it off and some accommodations charge you.
  • Be friendly to everyone, make an effort to get to know them as you will be living with them for at least a year, respect them, be the bigger person if someone else isn't and most importantly give everyone their own space you wouldn't want someone with you 24/7 would you?

Things You'll Need

  • As much food and toiletries you can bring.
  • All your favorite clothes, shoes, jewelry, perfume, aftershave etc.
  • Washing up liquid, rubber gloves,dish sponges etc.
  • Carpet stain remover should be brought as well as the accommodations will charge you for damages.
  • Two bed cover changes and two towels.
  • Box files, pencil and pen holders, toilet organizer and laundry bag.
  • Laptop and television as most accommodations do not have TVs.
  • Eating utensils that will be different from everyone else, also cooking apparatus such as frying pan etc as the one provided could be dirty.
  • Phone charger
