How to Prepare For a School Concert
Three Methods:For Choosing Your SongFor Preparing Your InstrumentAt The Concert Itself
So you were chosen to perform in your school's concert? Don't be afraid, because if you were rubbish, they wouldn't have asked you. But if you are good, it is worth participating. You need to know what song to play at the concert, and how to prepare yourself and your instrument.
Steps
Method 1 For Choosing Your Song
- 1Consider your audience. If you are playing in front of the school, choose a song that is popular amongst the students. If you are playing in front of all the parents, choose something a bit older, like '70s or '80s rock.
- 2Get together with another act. If you're playing the guitar alone, try teaming up with a drummer or bassist, as this will make your part sound better. Any instrument sounds rubbish on its own. And if you get on well, you could even start a band.
- 3Write your own song to perform at the concert. This will prove that you are a talented young musician.
Method 2 For Preparing Your Instrument
- 1Use a decent instrument. Use on that suits you. For instance, a V-shaped punk-rock guitar just doesn't look right on a little fat kid, and vice versa.
- 2Get hold of a decent sound system (if you're using an electronic instrument). Ask the head of your school's music department if they have any good speakers and amplifiers.
Method 3 At The Concert Itself
- 1Make sure your instrument is properly tuned in. The school will probably be recording or making a video of this concert, so you want to sound good.
- 2Walk onto the stage calmly. Wave to the crowd, or make some sort of gesture.
- 3Perform your song. Don't worry about the volume the amplifiers are set at, as this is a concert, not a rehearsal!
- 4Listen to the great applause you receive. Listening to people applauding your achievements is the most wonderful feeling ever.
Tips
- Look good for the concert. Wear casual clothes, that are comfortable and suit you.
- Drink plenty of water, as you will get hot and sweaty from all the nervous bits.
- Try not to let your palms sweat. This will greatly affect how you perform.
- Get a few friends to listen to a bit of your part before the concert. Ask them if they like it, and if they do, that is the song to use. If they don't, try making a few adjustments.
- If you're nervous, don't think about the crowd. You could try the old "Picture everyone in their underpants," but this will just put you off.
Warnings
- Performing at a school with students that are older than you can be tough. This is because if older students make fun of you, you won't be able to get them back. On the other hand, if you have a good act they're probably only jealous that they couldn't do that at your age.
- For girls: don't wear too much makeup on the night. Too much makeup looks ugly on young performers who don't need it.
