How to Prepare for a Police Patrol As a Policeman

There are several things to carry at a patrol such as small items you carry with your garment and other stuff which are carried in a briefcase or small suitcase.

    Prepare your clipboard with the following:
    • Information about codes
    • A list of current wanted people and vehicles
    • A list of court dates to be assigned for tickets given on this date.
    • Ballpoint pens (at least 3,one should be a space pen)
    • If allowed by your agency, pencils work better for writing on wet paper or the backs of carbonless forms like tickets.
    • Business and "victim assistance info" cards
    • Forms
    • Stickers
    • Blank paper
    • Detail drawings, e.g. big building complexes and areas
    • Checklists

    Prepare your briefcase with the following:
    • Police baton
    • Clipboard
    • City and street maps
    • Disinfectant spray and alcohol based hand sanitizer
    • Small and medium sized plastic bags

    Make sure you have the right items on your uniform and belt:
    • Notebook
    • Pepper spray
    • Pistol
    • Handcuffs, both metal and plastics
    • Gloves, both medical examination and leather gloves.
    • Torch (Flashlight) - at least a small one on the belt
    • Portable Radio
    • Taser weapon


  • Keep your eyes open
  • Do a quick check of your unit before each shift also check fluid levels i.e oil and transmission fluid. Check your emergency equipment i.e lights , sirens etc to make sure each item is functioning properly make sure you have a fresh tape in your vehicle camera system, fill your gas tank if needed.
  • All personal belongings should be marked with your name and station.
  • Take into consideration that the space and weight of the items is limited.
  • Make sure all items are in working order and can be accessed quickly in the event that you need them. Be sure all equipment is complete.
  • Keep a clean weapon and fresh ammo also carefully check other equipment for any defects that may be present and if necessary replace any thing you find to be defective.
  • Keep a fully charged Taser and replace batteries if needed also conduct a spark test before your shift and keep fresh cartridges for it. Also remember to charge your handheld radar gun
  • This packing list is only a suggestion, make sure your list meets the requirements of the job and area
  • Make a list of valuable items, collect receipts.


  • Prevent the content from falling out or mess up.
  • Be alert and cautious at all times
  • Make sure that unauthorized persons such as suspects cannot take your stuff during action. This includes theft and usage of your own weapons, esp. the baton.
  • Use both common sense and the things you learned at the Academy
  • It is imperative that you don't get hero syndrome if something isn't right and red flags start going up in your brain then immediately call for back up.
  • Be aware of what is around you at all times especially at night when you can't see as well as in daylight.
  • Adhere to Department policies at all times and use discretion in your personal conduct both on duty and off duty.
