Planning a Romantic Evening on a Budget
- 1Read the advice in How to Be Romantic. Even the most "romantic" evening will be boring and perhaps even unpleasant if you don't enter into it with a positive attitude.
- 2Begin the evening by cooking your favorite meal together. Make it fun and playful. Maybe cook in only an apron? Put on some of your favorite music, too. Or, if you'd like to treat your significant other who normally does the cooking, follow the advice in How to Cook For Your Girlfriend. Let your sweetie sit back and relax while you cook--perhaps you can prepare a bath for him or her to soak in while waiting. Create a romantic ambiance with mood lighting, candles, your best dishes, and exquisite glasses. Then sit back, relax and enjoy each other's company and the meal you created.
- 3Follow up dinner with a romantic walk around the neighborhood or go to a local park, beach or nature preserve. Taking a walk will give you the chance to continue enjoying each other while enjoying the scenery. And the exercise will help you work off your dinner.
- 4Stargaze together. If it's cold enough outside, bring a few blankets and a thermos with a warm drink inside and look for constellations. If you time it properly, you might even be able to watch a meteor shower.
- 5Clear your living room floor, put on some music, and dance. You can slow dance, or boogie, burlesque dance, or even try some break dancing moves, if you're feeling crazy!
- 6Watch movies together. Look for movies that you'll both enjoy. Get them at the library, where you can rent them for free or at low cost. Cuddle up together under a cozy blanket and make hot chocolate or tea if it's cold outside. If it's warm, make iced tea or a special cocktail. Burn some incense or scented candles to improve the ambiance.
- 7Play board and card games. A little playful competitiveness will make things more fun. You can also add twists by saying "If I win this game, you have to do --- for me."
- 8Remember that massages are relaxing, intimate, and free. All you really need is massage oil, but in a pinch you can always use lotion, bare hands, or even vegetable oil.
Tips
- Asking someone to take your children for this night is a must. It can be difficult to get in the mood when you have kids running around, potentially interrupting at inopportune moments. If money is an issue, offer to swap babysitting with another couple. Each of you will get a kid-free evening without paying a sitter and you'll be helping someone else get a night of romance too!
- If you both like camping, spending a night in the wilderness can be quite romantic and very affordable.
- If there are free fireworks on offer, these can be a great way to spend a romantic evening together, with a picnic meal and a comfortable blanket.
