How to Pack for a Trip to Paris

Paris in the springtime may be wonderful, but what about the rest of the year? Packing for a trip to Paris depends largely on what time of year you're going and whether or not you want to look like a tourist. In order to blend in with the Parisians but still pack all that you'll need for your trip, there are a few things you should and should not bring. The following are some suggestions on how to pack for a trip to Paris.

Pack warm clothes for a winter trip to Paris.
    • Paris in the winter can be cold and damp. It is essential to pack warm clothes such as gloves, toques, warm coat and even insulated shoes or boots. Sweaters are great for layering under coats, and fashionable scarves can be as much a fashion statement as a provider of warmth. If you don't want to look like a tourist, then keep your outer winter clothing in either black or dark shades and don't add too many flashy accessories.

Pack layers for Paris in the spring.
    • Paris in the spring is beautiful, but the weather can be unpredictable. An umbrella, warm coat, light jacket and sweaters are all recommended. Packing clothes that can be layered will help you stay comfortable if the day warms up or for chilly evenings.

Bring light clothing for the summer months.
    • In the summer Paris is warm and humid. Wearing light clothing is essential especially considering many buildings do not have air conditioning. An umbrella is a necessity as Paris can be surprisingly rainy during summer months. It can also be hot and sunny, so bring a hat or other sun protection.

Packing a street map and studying it in advance will help you find your way around. Bringing a good book to read while lounging in a street-side cafe will serve you well, and an iPod will be a welcome companion while traveling the Metro.

  • Leave your hair dryer and fanny pack at home. Every hotel room will have a hair dryer and nothing says "tourist" more than a fanny pack.
  • Pack light and in just 1 carry-on. If you find that you didn't pack something, buy it. Using a carry-on will reduce any chance of your luggage getting lost.
